Dell scales back CES presence in hint of move from home PCs

Dell is whittling back one of its staple practices at CES in a sign of a reduced focus on the home for 2012. New leaks Wednesday hinted to AllThingsD that the company would drop its near-traditional occupation of a whole floor at The Palms off of the Las Vegas strip in favor of the hotel suite invites and meeting rooms common to companies that don’t have major products to unveil at the show. AT&T may make Deutsche Telekom joint venture if merger fails

AT&T has raised the idea with T-Mobile’s parent Deutsche Telekom of a network joint venture if the now doubtful T-Mobile merger isn’t approved, insiders divulged Wednesday. The two are purportedly in early talks that the Wall Street Journal understood would see them share parts of each other’s network, even as they ran separate competitive businesses. Hungary issues Steve Jobs memorial stamps

Magyar Posta, the postal service of Hungary, has issued a numbered commemorative sheet honoring Apple co-founder Steve Jobs that incorporates a stamp-sized image in memory of Jobs, who died in October. An accompanying card shows silhouettes of some of Jobs’ characteristic poses and a quote about him from Erno Rubik, the Hungarian inventor of the Rubik’s Cube. Analyst: PC chips stockpiling due to HDD shortages, tablets

Although the floodwaters have receded in Thailand, the disaster is still said to be affecting supply chains in the tech industry. PCI Express 4.0 doubles bandwidth, due 2016

The PCI Special Interest Group is working on the PCI Express 4.0 standard, which would double the maximum transfer rates to 16 gigatransfers per second. PCIe 4.0 would be the last standard based on copper, with a move to optical board superseding it. China Unicom iPhone 4S almost ready for sale, says carrier

China Unicom is effectively ready to sell the iPhone 4S, according to MIC Gadget. “We will start sales once we get the certificate from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology,” Unicom sales executive Yu Yingtao is quoted as saying. “It’s not up to us.
