Apple says decision to face DOJ trial voluntary, talks to EU

Apple on Wednesday stated that its confronting a Department of Justice lawsuit over e-book pricing was deliberate. Attorney Daniel Floyd told Judge Denise Cote that Apple believed the lawsuit was “not an appropriate case” and wanted to prove itself in court. EditShare to debut all-new, free LightWorks on May 28th

Lightworks, a non-linear video editor (NLE) with a long history that was announced as going open-source and multi-platform two years ago, is preparing for a release on Monday, May 28th after several delays. While the debut will be Windows-only, developers EditShare plan on making OS X and Linux versions available shortly afterwards. Samsung’s Galaxy S III launch is running under security levels previously associated most closely with Apple, scoops on Wednesday unearthed. A tip to The Verge understood that test units were being put in generic enclosures that disguise the actual look for field testing. Apple Wants Trial in iBooks Antitrust Case [Mac Blog]

An Apple lawyer has said it wants a trial to defend itself in an antitrust lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice over the pricing of e-books. Apple’s attorney said the company “would like the case to be decided on the merits”. Apple Inc wants to go to trial to defend itself against U.S. government allegations that it conspired with publishers to raise prices of electronic books, a lawyer for the Silicon Valley giant said in court on Wednesday. Two publishers took a similar stance in the first hearing in Manhattan federal court since the anti-trust division of the Department of Justice last week accused Apple and five publishers of colluding to break up Amazon.com’s low-cost dominance of the digital book market. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for June 22. Apple has previously come out strongly against the lawsuit, with a spokesperson saying the accusations against the company were “simply not true.” Continue reading

Best Buy to run Windows Phone ‘parties’ with giveaways

Best Buy and Microsoft have teamed up on a Behind the Tiles series of events to spur on Windows Phone sales that borrow a handful of Apple cues. Running from Thursday to as late as May 17, some stores will be holding workshops that both let users try the overall lineup and undertake a “deep dive” into the Lumia 900 with an instructor.
