One issue holding up Apple iRadio: The economics of skipping songs (CNet) If you were expecting Apple’s rumored music streaming service to roll out at next month’s WWDC, you might be disappointed. Yahoo confirms Tumblr acquisition, Tumblr to remain independent
Yahoo has confirmed it has bought Tumblr, in a deal noted yesterday to be in the region of $1.1 billion. The search company has already moved its company blog over to the blogging platform, and despite CEO Marissa Mayer saying “We promise not to screw it up,” there is reportedly a large jump in the number of users moving from Tumblr to Wordpress…. CW will be the first network to stream shows on Apple TV
While it may not be a full-fledged HDTV, the Apple TV set-top box continues to expand its portfolio. According to a story first reported by Deadline , the CW is bringing its video content to the Apple TV via a dedicated app. The CW offering would mimic what the network already has on Microsoft’s Xbox; the network confirmed to MacRumors that the app will feature ad-supported full episodes available for streaming the day after they air. And, in a bonus for cord cutters , the app will not require an existing cable subscription to view content. A specific release date for the app has not yet been announced, though it should be sooner rather than later. The CW’s Xbox app already offers free, ad-supported streams of episodes the day after air. This marks the first foray from one of the major broadcast networks onto the Apple TV, though the box already features content from video middlemen like Hulu and Netflix; sports leagues like MLB, NHL, and NBA; video-sharing sites Vimeo and YouTube; and other video sources, like the Wall Street Journal . Thus far, video content has only gradually trickled onto the Apple TV: Hulu Plus, for example, just appeared last July . But the appearance of a CW app could signal a shift in the winds. With the recent incursion of Aereo into the broadcast space , the networks are sure to be looking for ways to keep control of their content. ABC recently announced that it would begin offering live streaming in its iOS app —but only in certain markets, and only for cable and satellite subscribers. Meanwhile, many of the studios and networks continue to enforce availability windows and device-specific streaming rights . Disney Interactive launches Story, a non-Disney-centric photo app
We know that Disney Interactive is capable of producing quality apps that aren’t based on classic Disney characters: Where’s My Water —which features a cartoon alligator named Swampy who was created specifically for a mobile game—has had plenty of App Store success on its own, without a major movie or show. But Disney Interactive announced a new iPhone app on Wednesday that’s neither game nor animated. In fact, it’s not pushing a Disney product or message at all. It’s called Story, and it’s designed to help you organize your digital media into a sharable storyline. Scott Gerlach, Disney Interactive’s Director of Engineering, said he and his development team wanted to make an app to help people get content off of their phones and out to a place that’s more widely accessible, with an emphasis on parents. Ten more years: What the future holds for iTunes Store
Over the course of its ten-year existence, the iTunes Store has evolved even as it has stood stock-still. Starting out as an online store that sold protected digital audio files, it expanded to include sales (and, in some cases, rentals) of movies, TV shows, apps, and books (both audio and electronic). Where it remains unbudged, though, is in its central mission: Sell, sell, and sell some more. Whether the purpose of its selling is to feed the hardware that Apple makes or to turn a profit on the media itself, the iTunes Store differs very little at its heart from the large “music, movies, books ’n’ things” emporiums of old. The store has been quite successful for Apple—to the point where the company now talks less about it as a way of getting people to purchase the next iPod or iOS device and more as a profit center. Just this week, for example, Apple announced that its total revenue from the store topped $4 billion in its fiscal second quarter, with $2.4 billion of that amount coming from media sales. As much success as Apple has enjoyed, is the model of the past ten years viable for the next ten? In my view, no. Two factors have altered the landscape: the changing attitudes of today’s media consumers, and the competition that Apple faces. Remains of the Day: Spaceward ho!
Part of Apple’s campus is delayed until after a spaceship launch, iTunes sales aren’t on the grow, and German iPhone users may once again be notified of their email schnell ! The remainders for Thursday, April 25, 2013 speak a dozen languages, know every local custom—they’ll blend in, disappear, you’ll never see them again. Apple Campus 2: Project Description (Apple) Apple’s updated the plans for its “spaceship” campus, adding information about parking, bicycle and pedestrian paths, and public art. But it also signals the delay of building the so-called “Tantau Development,” a series of buildings on the edge of the campus, until after the main building is opened. Perhaps most interesting of all is Apple’s report that its current campus contains 4,506 trees. So, well, at least we know what they’ve got Scott Forstall doing until he’s free to leave . iTunes Sales Are Huge! But Growth May Be Slowing. Remains of the Day: Let’s have another cup of coffee
Pencils down: Time to turn in your apps. Elsewhere, your digital media marketplaces grow up so fast, and a date with Tim Cook is on the auction block. The remainders for Wednesday, April 24, 2013 will have another piece of pie. Do you see your future in code? (Apple) Students who want to attend Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference but just doesn’t have the cash have another option: Beginning April 29, they can apply for one of 150 scholarships to the June shindig. They have to be a full-time student, a current member of one of Apple’s developer program, and must create and submit an app that tells Apple about themselves. Tip: Don’t make a flashlight app. A Decade of iTunes (iTunes) To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Continue reading
