News Corp to close digital newspaper The Daily on Dec 15th
News Corporation is shuttering its digital-only newspaper, The Daily, as part of the company’s organizational changes. The date of its last publication, December 15th, will be just two months before the second anniversary of the iPad-only publication’s creation. The primary motivation behind the closure has been revealed to be its unprofitability, caused through consistently low readership numbers…. Continue reading

Article: Editorial: Why Apple’s $329 iPad mini Price Is Right, For Now
Ever since Apple successfully released the $249 iPod mini in 2004, defying analysts who expected more than a $50 price savings over the $299 full-sized iPod, criticisms of the company’s new product prices have increasingly been tempered with a caveat: “the price seems too high, but this is Apple, so it will probably sell well anyway.” While there’s some truth in that sentiment, “Apple knows best” thinking has become… Continue reading

Article: Multi-Editorial: iLounge’s Editors on Apple’s Passbook
One of the most conspicuous new features of iOS 6 is Apple’s Passbook, an app that digitally stores boarding passes, movie tickets, coupons, and retail loyalty cards, while opening a door to easier mobile payments on the iPhone. Conceptually, Passbook is very promising, but we’ve been discussing whether it actually makes paying for anything easier, and whether the currently participating companies are appealing enough to get it off the… Continue reading

Article: An Open Letter to Tim Cook: Apple’s Latest Lightning Rod
Good Morning Mr. Cook, Something odd happened at Apple this morning. While most of the world was sleeping, some of us were awake ordering new iPhones and iPods from the online Apple Store. During the sales process, a little dialog box popped up noting that the new “iPhone includes a Lightning to 30-pin Adapter,” and offered to sell us an “additional” one along with the purchase. Soon afterwards, Apple sales representatives… Continue reading

Article: Editorial: iLounge On 2012’s iPods, iPhone 5 + Lightning
Plenty of digital ink has already been spilled following yesterday’s debut of the iPhone 5, two new iPod models, and Apple’s new Lightning connector—amazingly, “reviews” of the new devices are already appearing online after 15-minute hands-on sessions. Perhaps by design, so many small new things were announced during and after the event that it was hard to take a step back and consider the bigger picture. So that’s… Continue reading

Article: Editorial: Why Jerry’s Seinfeld’s Wrong About iPhone Cases
iPhone cases are an easy target. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld just mocked them and their users in a video. Apple executives once claimed during a Q&A session that they didn’t use iPhone cases, despite selling them. And some particularly hard-core Apple fans have opined that iPhones are too beautiful to cover up. Yet cases are exceptionally popular with the rest of the population, and have been for years. Last month, an internal Apple survey revealed… Continue reading

Article: Editorial: What Will Apple’s Retail Changes Mean To You?
It’s nearly a truism that Apple’s retail store experience is legendary. Steve Jobs set out to reinvent the retail shopping experience for computers, and as was usually the case, he succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. With Ron Johnson at the helm, Apple’s stores quickly became a Mecca for longtime Mac users, and critically began to attract new customers—“switchers”—who were ready to transition from… Continue reading

Article: Editorial: The Future of iWallet + Digital Payments on iOS
Technologists have claimed for years that cell phones will eventually replace our wallets, and they’re probably correct. Even before the iPhone’s 2007 launch, Japanese phones were paying for soft drinks and subway rides, while more sophisticated credit card alternatives were in early testing stages. Yet for the most part, we’re not much closer to a wallet-less planet than we were five years ago. Today, the iPhone offers a handful… Continue reading

Article: Editorial: Are fewer events, less news killing Apple’s buzz?
Though it’s still not clear whether Apple delayed the iPhone 4S’s launch to October because of engineering delays or for strategic marketing reasons, the company’s decision has had some major consequences. As it turned out, Apple didn’t just alter the normal timing of iPhone releases: it also ended a well-established timeframe of announcements that generated a steady flow of excitement throughout each year, with separate iPad,… Continue reading
