Upcoming Saskatchewan Apple Retail Store Fills Huge Void in Coverage [Mac Blog]
ifoAppleStore reports that Apple is planning to open a new retail store in the Cornwall Centre shopping mall in Regina, Saskatchewan. The location is a notable one for being the first in the vast province in the heart of Canada, with no other Apple retail stores located within a 700-mile radius. Cornwall Centre is located in city center and has 90 retailers in an enclosed mall. City planning documents mention the new store, but the exact location within the mall isn’t known. Based on construction schedules, the store could open by November 2012. Regina, the provincial capital with a population of roughly 200,000, is the second-largest city and part of the second-largest metropolitan area in Saskatchewan, just behind Saskatoon. Update : As noted in our forums and confirmed by The Regina Leader-Post ( via iPhoneinCanada.ca ), the forthcoming store is actually a reseller and not an official Apple retail store. Regina’s Cornwall Centre is getting a store selling Apple products — though, contrary to rumours that circulated Tuesday morning on the web — it won’t be an Apple store. Krista Bebeau, the downtown mall’s marketing manager, said it will an outlet of a firm called iWorld Connect — the website of which (http://iworldconnect.com/) confirms the company is opening a store in Regina. Scott Forstall and Mickey Drexler Net Millions in Apple Stock Sales [Mac Blog]
A pair of filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reveal that Apple executive Scott Fortsall and board member Mickey Drexler each sold off tens of thousands of shares of Apple stock on Friday, netting millions of dollars each. Forstall, who serves as senior vice president of iOS Software and has been a fixture in Apple’s keynote presentations and media events, sold off 64,151 shares of Apple stock on Friday, netting roughly $38.7 million. Forstall gained 120,000 shares of Apple stock last month as a 2008 retention bonus of restricted stock units converted to actual stock. 55,849 shares were immediately sold off at that time to account for the taxes due on the conversion, and Forstall held on to the remaining shares until last Friday. Following Friday’s transaction, Forstall holds 2,988 shares of Apple stock, worth roughly $1.75 million at today’s share price and the same number of shares he held prior to last month’s vesting of his 2008 retention bonus. Forstall is also in line to receive a number of other stock grants should he remain with the company over the next several years, including a 150,000-unit grant that will vest in equal portions next year and in 2016. A separate grant of 100,000 units will vest in 2014. Meanwhile, longtime Apple board member Mickey Drexler, who serves as Chairman and CEO of J. Crew and was previously President and CEO of The Gap, has cashed in on stock options dating back nearly a decade in order to reap a substantial windfall. Drexler exercised a set of 20,000 options from 2003 priced at $9.16 each and a second set of 20,000 options from 2004 priced at $14.205 each, selling off all 40,000 shares on Friday for $24.1 million. After accounting for the exercise prices on the options, Drexler netted close to $23.7 million. Drexler continues to hold 584 shares of Apple stock worth roughly $384,000 at today’s share price. Sirius app update drops rewind feature for some stations
The newest update for SiriusXM’s iOS and Android app has seen the removal of a very popular feature due to conflicts over licensing rights. As of Version 2.0.2 of the iOS app, SiriusXM has confirmed that users no longer have the ability to rewind five hours on all stations. Sirius cited contract complications involving the owners of the channels that lost the rewind feature, but gave no further details as to when, if ever, the feature might be available on these channels again…. Australia asks Microsoft, Apple to explain high local prices
Technology companies, including Microsoft and Apple, are being asked by the Australian government to explain why prices of downloadable content in that country are higher than in the US. The parliamentary inquiry is hoped by some parties to lower the prices of digital goods in the region, as regulators have deemed the existing explanations to be insufficient…. Continue reading

iTunes Match Launching in New Countries Including Austria, Greece, and Italy
MacRumors has begun receiving reports that iTunes Match has started going live in several new countries today. So far we have heard from users in Austria, Greece, and Italy, with some users reporting that they have been required to agree to updated iTunes Store terms and conditions addressing the service while others have even been able to sign up for the service. iTunes Match signup page in Italian iTunes Store It remains unclear just how broad this latest round of debuts is, as Apple has yet to update its support document outlining availability of iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match, but signs of activity in various international iTunes Stores suggest that iTunes Match may also be going live in Bulgaria, Portugal, and Slovenia. As part of the new rollout of Apple’s paid iTunes Match service, users in these countries should also be receiving access to the free iTunes in the Cloud services for music and music video, which allow users to re-download purchased content any number of times to devices associated with their iTunes Store accounts. 98% of U.S. Apple Retail Stores Out of Stock of Apple TV [Updated]
Last week, we noted that shortages of the Apple TV at third-party retailers had begun spreading to Apple itself, with a number of the company’s own retail stores reporting that the set-top box was unavailable for immediate in-store pickup. With a part number for a product with the code name of “J33″ and known to be the next-generation Apple TV also surfacing last week, it certainly appears that an update is imminent. With Apple’s iPad 3 media event now roughly 36 hours away and Apple also expected to unveil an updated Apple TV at the event, we’ve been watching as more and more Apple retail stores are running dry of the current model. By our most recent count, 98% of Apple’s 246 U.S. stores are currently out of stock, leaving only four with the Apple TV available for immediate pickup during store hours: – San Francisco flagship (San Francisco, California) – Higuera Street (San Luis Obispo, California) – SoHo (New York, New York) – South Hills Village (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) A fifth store, the Valley Fair location in Santa Clara, California, was showing “in stock” status for the Apple TV just a few hours ago but is now simply listing the product as “unavailable for pickup”. For those retail stores currently out of stock, the earliest an online store order placed today could be available for pickup would be March 9, although some stores are quoting pickup dates as far out as March 15. These lead times are, however, fairly typical for out of stock products that need to be shipped to a store for pickup. But being so close to Wednesday’s media event suggests that any orders would be filled with the new model. Apple’s U.S. online store does continue to show “in stock” availability for the Apple TV. Customers selecting free or 2 business day shipping are being quoted a delivery estimate of Thursday, March 8, while next-day shipping could see an arrival on Wednesday, March 7, the day of the event. It seems likely, however, that Apple would at this point also stall on shipping direct delivery orders until Wednesday’s announcement. A number of Apple’s other online stores around the world are still quoting “in stock” status for the Apple TV, although some have slipped by a few days ahead of the event. Online stores in Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway, and the United Kingdom are currently showing 2-4 business days for shipping estimates, while those in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, and Switzerland are quoting 1-2 business days. Rumors and speculation have suggested that Apple will be delivering a new, more powerful model of the Apple TV on Wednesday, offering support for 1080p video to complement the ultra-high resolution display on the new iPad. Apple may also roll out updated iTunes Store video content at the higher resolution. Update : The San Francisco and San Luis Obispo stores are now also out of stock of the Apple TV, leaving only SoHo and South Hills Village with immediate availability of the device. Continue reading

iPhone 4S Launches in 22 New Countries with 1-2 Week Estimates for Online Orders
Apple today officially launched the iPhone 4S in 22 new countries, marking the second round of launches for the device. The company began taking pre-orders last week ahead of the launch scheduled for the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. iPhone 4S order page for Apple’s Swedish online store While Apple does not offer online sales in all of the new launch countries and customers looking to purchase subsidized models on contract will not be able to purchase online, Apple is currently quoting shipping estimates of 1-2 weeks for unlocked devices in nearly all of the new markets with online stores. The lone exception is Singapore, where all iPhone 4S models are listed as currently unavailable . Demand for the iPhone 4S has been high in that country, with reports indicating that carrier partner SingTel sold out of appointment slots to purchase the device within 90 minutes of opening registration earlier this week. Apple Opens Up Pre-Orders for Next Round of iPhone 4S Launches
Following last week’s launch of the iPhone 4S in the first batch of seven countries, Apple is set to debut the new device in 22 more countries next Friday, October 28th. Apple’s online stores in many of those new countries began taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4S today, giving customers in the new markets the chance to join the queue for delivery. The new launch countries include Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Apple does not operate online stores in all of those markets, however, and thus the new pre-orders for unlocked iPhone 4S models through Apple are only available in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Customers in other countries and those looking to purchase subsidized units on contract may be able to arrange for pre-orders through their local iPhone carrier partners. Rather than promising October 28th delivery for iPhone 4S pre-orders in the new batch of countries, Apple is currently citing shipping estimates of 1-2 weeks. It is unknown if Apple is planning to meet the original October 28th date or if availability will slip slightly in the face of strong demand in markets where the device has already launched. Apple announced opening weekend sales of four million units for the iPhone 4S, more than double that of the iPhone 4 last year. Continue reading
