Next MacBook Air Update to Focus on Retina Displays Too?
With long-running rumors of ultra high-resolution “Retina” displays for Apple’s next-generation MacBook Pro receiving a significant boost with reports from several sources surfacing yesterday and similar upgrades now being rumored for the iMac , fans of the MacBook Air have been awaiting word on when they might expect Apple’s smallest Mac notebooks to gain the feature. 9to5Mac now reports that Apple is indeed unsurprisingly planning to bring Retina displays to the MacBook Air, with that upgrade being the most significant change for the next-generation line. Apple’s new MacBook Air will not see major changes across the entire computer like the next-generation MacBook Pro, but this update will truly be all about the Retina Display. Apple is preparing both new 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch models. These new Airs lack notable design changes, but feature fast and power-efficient Ivy Bridge processors and improved graphics engines to support the Retina Display, according to supply chain sources. The new Airs will also use improved Apple internal battery technology in order to support the battery life required by high-pixel-density screens such as the Retina Display, according to sources familiar with prototype versions of the super-thin notebook’s internal components. The report’s source suggests that the updated MacBook Air is unlikely to appear at next month’s Worldwide Developers Conference, with Apple still working to meet the Retina display’s power requirements within the MacBook Air’s thin form factor. Apple is also reportedly undecided on whether it will include USB 3.0 in the next-generation MacBook Air. The USB 3.0 standard, offering higher data transfer speeds, is reportedly being included on the revamped MacBook Pro, but the company is still weighing whether it wants to bring the standard to its lower-priced MacBook Air line. Flashback Malware’s Ad-Click Hijacking Detailed, Could Reap $10,000/Day
Antivirus firm Symantec has published a new blog post examining how the Flashback malware affecting hundreds of thousand of Macs has been generating revenue for its authors by hijacking users’ ad clicks. According to the report, the widespread nature of the infection means that malware authors could have been generating up to $10,000 per day from the scheme at its peak based on previous analysis of malware click redirection. The Flashback ad-clicking component is loaded into Chrome, Firefox, and Safari where it can intercept all GET and POST requests from the browser. Flashback specifically targets search queries made on Google and, depending on the search query, may redirect users to another page of the attacker’s choosing, where they receive revenue from the click . (Google never receives the intended ad click.) Symantec’s work on the ad-click hijacking aspect of Flashback comes after Russian firm Dr. Web, which was responsible for the initial publicity about the malware, published its own report examining some of the early data on infected computers seeking to connect to command-and-control servers. The report looks at nearly 100,000 connections that came in on April 13, finding that close to two-thirds of the infected machines identified themselves as running Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which was the last version of OS X to ship with Java enabled by default. OS X Lion does not include Java by default, and thus was responsible for only 11% of infections seen during the survey period. Flashback infection share vs. operating system usage share (Data via Dr. Web, Chart via Computerworld) As noted by Computerworld , OS X Lion represents nearly 40% of OS X copies currently in use, suggesting that Apple’s decision to remove Java from the default Lion install is indeed helping to limit infections on Apple’s newest machines. [W]hile Snow Leopard’s and Leopard’s infection rates are higher than their usage shares, the opposite’s true of OS X 10.7, or Lion. The 2011 OS accounted for 39.6% of all copies of OS X used last month, yet represented only 11.2% of the Flashback-compromised Macs. Dr. Web’s data on OS kernel versions being reported from infected Macs also demonstrates that many Mac users do not keep their systems up-to-date, with roughly 25% of Snow Leopard and Lion systems seen in the survey reporting themselves as at least one version behind Apple’s most recent updates (10.6.8 for Snow Leopard and 10.7.3 for Lion). Google MapsGL gains enhanced 3D buildings
Google has further enhanced its use of WebGL to now add more 3D perspective to buildings seen on its MapsGL project, an alternative version of Google Maps (which received the improvement in March). The improvements now add a “parallax” view that allows users to pan around buildings and see them from different angles while still in overhead view. The buildings become translucent in order to avoid obscuring roadways or other landmarks while panning, and are most noticeable on taller buildings…. Continue reading
Ex-Nokia exec shifts blame to Elop for drop in phones
Former Nokia and later Symbian Foundation executive Lee Williams in an interview Wednesday blamed current CEO Stephen Elop for the company’s current troubles. The former Symbian S60 Senior VP told CNET that Elop had “no overarching vision,” allegedly unlike his predecessors. Before him, Nokia was purportedly always focused on the future and would “never give up” its stance as the lead…. Continue reading
