Court evidence: Jobs read Apple rumor sites, queried Cue on reports
According to a an email exchange between then-CEO Steve Jobs and Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue submitted in court earlier today as part of the Department of Justice’s e-book price-fixing trial, Apple’s co-founder and then-leader read Mac rumor-and-news sites such as AppleInsider and would question the veracity of items found there. In the exchange, which happened just three months after Apple had launched the iBookstore, Jobs wants to know more about self-publishing options…. Continue reading

Time Warner Cable in Talks with Apple on Streaming Video Deals
According to Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt, who spoke to investors at the Bank of America Merill Lynch Global Telecom and Media Conference today (via FierceCable ), Time Warner is in talks with Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung over potential streaming video deals that are similar to its existing partnership with Roku. Time Warner Cable brought its authenticated cable service, TWC TV , to Roku in March. With the app, Time Warner Cable subscribers are able to watch up to 300 live TV channels with any TV connected to a Roku device, without the need for a cable box. Time Warner has a similar deal with Samsung to deliver cable programming to its connected TVs. “You should assume we’re talking to everyone who makes devices like this, whether it’s Samsung smart TVs, Apple, Microsoft,” Britt said at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Telecom and Media conference. Britt’s remarks suggest Time Warner Cable may eventually offer the TWC TV app through the Apple TV set-top and Microsoft’s new Xbox One gaming console, which will debut later this year. Apple recently struck a deal with the CW network to bring content to the Apple TV through a dedicated CW app, and it appears that Apple is open to other deals that could potentially bring the TWC TV to the Apple TV. Presumably, such an app would function similarly to the version offered via Roku, allowing Time Warner Cable subscribers to use the Apple TV to stream live television channels. Britt’s comments confirm a Wall Street Journal report from last year, which suggested that Apple was working on deals to create a set-top box that would allow user to view live cable channels. Such deals with cable companies are necessary if Apple wants to expand its product lineup with additional TV-centric products like the “iTV,” which has been rumored to be in the works since 2011. At the D11 conference last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook reiterated that television continues to be an “area of great interest” for the company. Continue reading
Plants vs. Zombies 2 to Launch on July 18 For Free [iOS Blog]
PopCap first hinted at a Plants vs. Zombies sequel in March, announcing a summer launch date. The company followed that up by narrowing down the release date to July, and now PopCap has announced that the game’s official launch is planned for July 18. In addition to unveiling a new animated trailer, PopCap has also provided some details on the upcoming game, which is titled Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time . The sequel features the same lane defense gameplay that made the original a hit, but it includes time travel to all new locations. Designed from the ground up as a live service, the ever-expanding universe of Plants vs. Zombies 2 continues the epic struggle of plants defending your brainz against zombies from your backyard through the vast reaches of time, both past and future. New worlds with new levels, plants, zombies and new ways to play will be released on an ongoing basis. Leveraging the touch interface of Apple’s popular mobile devices, Plants vs. Zombies 2 includes all-new touch-screen power-ups that enable players to “break the fourth wall” and interact with zombies directly, as well as via plant defenses. Also returning for the sequel is Crazy Dave, the addled neighbor who serves as a guide for players and shopkeeper for special plant upgrades and other tools and weapons. New touch-screen power-ups, plant food that supercharges plants, and novel new game mechanics that both help and hinder players’ efforts to thwart the zombie hordes will enthrall existing fans and new players alike. PopCap has also announced that Plants vs. Zombies 2 will be free to play, with in-game items and upgrades available for a fee. The company claims that players will be able to access “the vast majority of the game” without paying money. PopCap is planning to provide an exclusive look at Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time at E3 next week. The original Plants vs. Zombies game for both the iPhone and the iPad can be downloaded from the App Store for $0.99. – Plants vs. Zombies [ Direct Link ] – Plants vs. Zombies HD [ Direct Link ] Continue reading

Semi-official ‘Apple Refurb’ Ebay store closed
An eBay store that sold refurbished Apple products — seemingly with Apple’s blessing — at prices equal to or below those of Apple’s own refurbished store has been closed, at least temporarily. The store, which sold officially-refurbished Apple products under the seller name “refurbished_outlet” (a long-standing power seller on eBay) now has no products listed after zeroing out all inventory sometime Saturday. The store gained notoriety by selling some items below normal refurb prices, offering a PayPal option, and avoiding taxes in some states…. Continue reading
Review: Sell or purchase items on-the-go with eBay for iOS
Keep an eye on all of your current eBay transactions. The first rule of online auctions is that you need be constantly connected—if not, how will you be able to bid on a desired item last minute if you’re away from your computer? Thanks to eBay’s iOS app , you don’t have to worry about ever missing an auction. This full-fledged app allows you to do just about anything eBay’s full website does. eBay is a free download for iOS devices running iOS 4.3 and later. The app lets you track items that you’re watching, bidding on, or selling. If you’re a buyer, you can review and submit best offers, bid on items at the last minute, and send messages and questions to sellers. If you’re a seller, you can review submitted best offers, track your sold and unsold items, list new items with your own item images, relist unsold items, and create and schedule auctions. Place new items up for auction straight through the app. The eBay app lets you search for items to purchase (or, if you’re just curious—say, if you’re looking at an item for resale and you want to know how much it’s selling for) using a rather comprehensive search feature. You can search for an item using keywords or by scanning a UPC, EAN, or QR code, or you can refine your search to show completed listings, sold items, and items with free shipping. Items can be sorted by category, condition (new or used), price range, and buying format (auction or buy it now). Once you find what you’re looking for, you can place a bid, opt to Buy it Now, or add it to your Watch List, all through the app. You can also share the item via Facebook, Twitter, text message, or email, or sell an item similar to the one you’ve found. Deals for Apple Custom Radio Service ‘Nowhere Near to Being Completed’
Back in early September, news broke in several publications about Apple’s plans for a Pandora-like custom radio service , with the company reportedly seeking to arrange deals with music labels to allow more flexibility than permitted under the mandatory licensing used by Pandora. At the time, a launch was said to be “months away”. By late October, reports were indicating that talks remained in limbo with Apple and the major music labels remaining far apart in their licensing offers, although Apple was reportedly still hoping for an early 2013 launch . As part of a report noting that Pandora’s stock plunged yesterday after issuing weak guidance for the upcoming quarter, CNET says that Apple still has not made any significant progress with the major music labels. The rumors continue to swirl but multiple music industry sources have told CNET in recent weeks that the deal that Apple has offered for iRadio has left the major record companies — Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group — cold. My sources say that, at a minimum, a deal with all the majors is nowhere near to being completed. Even if Apple sweetens its offer or the big labels change their mind tomorrow, these deals take a while to put to bed. Even in the best case scenario, it will still be a while before we see iRadio. Eddy Cue has long been Apple’s “master negotiator” for content deals, a role that he has reportedly filled with a calm yet firm demeanor that has made him very well respected in the business. As Apple’s content empire has grown, Cue’s role has expanded to the point where it now encompasses the iTunes Store, App Store, iCloud, iBookstore, iAd, Siri, and Maps. Continue reading
iTunes 11 Store Adds Gift Card Redemption Via Camera [Mac Blog]
In Apple’s just-released iTunes 11 , users visiting the iTunes Store to redeem gift cards have a new option allowing them to simply take a photo of the code on the back of the card with their computer’s camera in order to redeem their cards. The option, which requires a card containing a box around the code to assist with recognition, allows users to quickly and easily redeem gift cards without having to worry about accurately typing in the unique 16-character code. Users are also still allowed to enter their codes manually for redemption. Continue reading

iPhone 5 Receives Final Regulatory Certification in China
The Wall Street Journal reports that the iPhone 5 has received its final certification from Chinese regulators, opening the door to a launch on Apple’s carrier partners China Unicom and China Telecom. Vendors in China often start selling new handsets within weeks of approval by China’s Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center. The regulator said in two posts on its website that it had approved licenses for an iPhone supported by China Telecom and one supported by China Unicom. China Telecom chairman Wang Xiaochu had previously stated that the iPhone 5 would be launching on the carrier by early December, and the carrier has reportedly started taking pre-orders in recent days. Apple has been placing a strong focus on the Chinese market, which now accounts for 15% of the company’s revenue and and saw revenues rise 78% to $23.8 billion in fiscal 2012. Still, Apple’s product launches in China have typically lagged behind those in the company’s other major markets, leading to a booming gray market for devices brought in from Hong Kong and elsewhere while also leaving the company more vulnerable to competitors. But with Apple’s goal of bringing the iPhone 5 to at least 100 countries before the end of 2012, the company is clearly working hard on compressing its worldwide rollout timetables. Continue reading
