Avid Takes on Apple’s iMovie with Avid Studio for iPad

While companies such as Avid and Adobe have attempted to capitalize on Apple’s Final Cut Pro X missteps by wooing users in need of professional video editing and production software, AllThingsD notes that Avid is pushing forward on the mobile “prosumer” front with its just-launched Avid Studio [ App Store ] app for iPad. The iPad obviously imposes some limitations on what can be done with the software compared with the full Avid Studio for Windows, but Avid suggests that it is full-featured enough to be used for editing on the go and is ideally suited as a companion to the desktop app. The idea is that the iPad app and the desktop software are complementary, [Avid vice president Tanguy] Leborgne said, so that users who want to create and edit projects on the go can do so, but ultimately preserve them by taking them to the PC. The Avid iPad app does have some nice features, including an interface that includes a storyboard area and an editing timeline. And while some video editors rely heavily on customized keyboards or a mouse, others might appreciate the ability to pinch and squeeze videos and images to scale them on the touchscreen of the iPad, or the ability to move text and titles around with their fingers. Avid Studio for iPad is launching with an introductory price tag of $4.99, which will increase to $7.99 after the first month. Continue reading

Macworld 2012: WDC Shows Off MyBook Thunderbolt Duo

We briefly mentioned WDC’s press release that they would be showing their new MyBook Thunderbolt Duo at Macworld. Here are photos from the show floor of the unit. As expected, the new drive shares the same appearance as their previous two drive MyBook hardware . This new model, however, incorporates two Thunderbolt ports that allows the units to be daisy chained with each other to create a single logical drive. At the show, WDC was showing 4 devices daisy chained with Thunderbolt in a striped configuration. Each MyBook Thunderbolt Duo had two 3TB drives, giving a total capacity of 24TB that appeared on the desktop as one contiguous 24TB device. The individual drives within each unit are user serviceable/replaceable and can be configured in either RAID 0 or RAID 1 configurations. The product will be available this quarter with pricing to be announced then. Continue reading

Comic Writer Tries Out iBooks Author [iOS Blog]

Apple’s new iBooks Author application enables users to make interactive iBooks on their Mac. Apple says the software allows authors to make “stunning iBooks textbooks, cookbooks, history books, picture books, and more for iPad.” Richard Stevens, author of the Diesel Sweeties webcomic, has expanded that list of possibilities to include comic strips. Diesel Sweeties author Robert Stevens writes of the project : I had a few insomniac hours this weekend and did a little experiment: Waking Up With the Diesel Sweeties is a tiny little free ebook for the iPad. It contains all my comics from last month with a few tweaks, formatted in iBooks Author. This version only works on the iPad. It’s not in the iBookstore, so you’ll need to download the file and sync it to your iPad. Stevens is offering the iBook free via download from his website, not via the iBookstore, but it is fairly simple to acquire the book: – Click the book link while using Mobile Safari on your iPad. – Download to your desktop machine and email it to yourself to open in iBooks. – Toss it in your Dropbox and open it in iBooks from there. – Add it to your iTunes library and sync the book to your iPad The author says he is considering how to combine his twelve years of comics into one huge collection, and appears to be interested in iBooks Author as a potential production device for his ongoing comic collections as well. The Waking Up With the Diesel Sweeties iBook is available from the Diesel Sweeties website. [ Direct Link ] iBooks Author is available free in the Mac App Store. [ App Store ] Continue reading

Das Keyboard, a popular keyboard manufacturer that specializes in “clicky” mechanical keyboards like the Apple Extended Keyboard or the IBM Model M , has announced a Macintosh-edition of its Model S Professional keyboard. Das’s keyboards are a favorite of many computer users, including MacRumors chief Arnold Kim. OnLive Desktop for iPad Now Available on App Store

OnLive’s virtual Windows 7 / Office app for the iPad has arrived on the App Store. As we reported earlier this week, OnLive Desktop offers iPad users access to full-featured versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The applications are running on OnLive’s servers and streamed to your iPad. OnLive offers a number of plans for the service, including a Free service as server capacity is available. iPhone 4S Closes Sales Gap on Android as Apple Sweeps Top Three Smartphone Models [iOS Blog]

TechCrunch writes of the latest report from NPD, covering U.S. smartphone sales in October and November of last year. The data, which begins right about when the iPhone 4S was released, shows a dramatic increase in market share for the iPhone. The jump, from 26% in Q3 2011 to 43% in October and November, is due in-part to pent-up demand for the next iPhone following the pushback of the “iPhone 5″ from the traditional June release cycle. As a result, iPhone share is unlikely to remain quite so high going forward, but the gain is nonetheless impressive. Perhaps even more striking is that the top three phone models are all iPhones. Unsurprisingly, the iPhone 4S is the most popular, followed by the now-$99 iPhone 4. The iPhone 3GS, free on AT&T with a two-year contract in its third year of availability, comes in third, ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S 4G and Samsung Galaxy S II — both Android phones introduced in 2011. Samsung, like Apple, makes three of the top ten most popular models ; HTC holds two spots, whilst Motorola and LG each round out the remaining models with one model each. Continue reading

Infinity Blade Revenue Tops $30 Million [iOS Blog]

In June of last year, Epic Games reported that it had made more than $10 million from the sale of Infinity Blade on iOS devices. Now, with the addition of Infinity Blade II to the roster, which Epic says has made more than $5 million since it was introduced at the beginning of December, the Infinity Blade franchise has passed more than $30 million in total revenue. Epic Games, Inc. and its award-winning Salt Lake City-based development studio, ChAIR Entertainment, today announced that earnings from ChAIR’s blockbuster Infinity Blade video game franchise have eclipsed $30 million in just one year since the introduction of the original game. One of the most popular gaming franchises to be launched on the App Store, the award-winning series has also created significant licensing interest in the underlying Unreal Engine 3 technology from developers worldwide. Further fueling franchise momentum is the recent release of Infinity Blade II, which has seen net earnings in excess of $5 million in just one month since release on Dec. 1, 2011, a mark which took the original title three months to achieve. Infinity Blade II is on pace to exceed the record success of the original Infinity Blade game, which has grossed more than $23 million to date. Infinity Blade II is a universal app, available for $6.99 on the App Store. [ Direct Link ] The original Infinity Blade is also available for iPhone and iPad, and is available for $5.99 on the App Store. [ Direct Link ] Continue reading
