Tweetbot for iPad Hits The App Store [iOS Blog]

Popular iPhone Twitter client Tweetbot has finally arrived on the iPad , with a user interface instantly familiar to any current Tweetbot user. Designed for the Twitter power-user, Tweetbot packs a lot of punch into an intuitive, slick interface, with unique functionality like Smart Gestures which give quick access to a variety of features through double or triple-taps. The Next Web and Business Insider have more in-depth reviews. The app is $2.99 and is a separate purchase from the iPhone app, a fact some users may dislike, but Tweetbot co-developer Paul Haddad explained his thoughts behind the pricing strategy to Business Insider: People complain that it isn’t $.99 or free. But we never said we’d make Tweetbot universal. If you look at the other paid universal Twitter clients they are for the most part $5 and I think we have more features than those, so we’re comfortable with the pricing and having separate apps. Also released today was Tweetbot 2.0 for iPhone , bringing updated timeline, direct message, and reply views, as well as a number of other smaller changes. It’s a solid upgrade that’s free for current Tweetbot for iPhone users. Tweetbot for iPad is available for $2.99 from the App Store. iPhone and iPod Engineering VP David Tupman Leaves Apple [iOS Blog]

Apple’s vice president for iPhone and iPod engineering David Tupman has left the company, according to 9to5Mac . While not a member of the senior executive team, Tupman spent a decade at Apple and has been considered to be one of the key iOS hardware executives reporting to senior vice president Bob Mansfield. Weeks before the introduction of the first iPod, Apple hired Tupman, and he soon became Apple’s vice president of iPod engineering. He had a big hand in the development and success of every iPod released to date, and when it was time to build the iPhone, Tupman joined the team behind that product, too. As Apple shifted its engineering resources to its mobile line of products, Tupman was named Vice President of iPod and iPhone Engineering— a major role at Apple. Besides playing a major part in growing Apple’s mobile device business into one of the most successful businesses ever, Tupman has his name on at around 70 Apple technology patents, such as power and battery life management, noise-canceling ear buds, Apple’s tiny iPhone power adapters, and mobile device interaction with accessories. Tupman’s future plans remain unknown, although we understand that he has been taking some personal time following his long term of service at Apple. Apple is said to be searching internally for Tupman’s replacement, but has apparently not yet named a successor. Continue reading

Virgin America Names Jet After Steve Jobs [Mac Blog]

Virgin America has named one of its fleet after Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, emblazoning a popular Jobs quote “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish” on the side of this Airbus A320. Steve mentioned the phrase in his 2005 commencement address at Stanford University, noting that it was originally used in The Whole Earth Catalog in the 1970′s: On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you. A Virgin America spokesperson explained to MacRumors that the name was chosen as part of an internal plane naming competition. The plane, with tail number N845VA, first flew last fall. Virgin America is the only airline based in Silicon Valley, with 2,200 employees based in Burlingame. ‘Evi’ Arrives as Potential Challenger to Siri [iOS Blog]

TechCrunch reports on Evi , a new Siri-like offering from True Knowledge that has launched for iOS devices [ App Store ] and as a beta for Android devices. While Siri provides a fair amount of integration with Apple apps and services such as reminders and calendaring, it is currently limited to the iPhone 4S, while Evi is compatible with all iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices running iOS 4.0 or later. She – we’ll call this Artificial Intelligence a she – returns amazing results when consulted. Given that Siri is just not very good at giving answers which aren’t about the US, Evi might just be the Siri for the rest of the world, especially since Evi wil run on any Andoid or iPhone, and not just the 4S. I’ve seen her in action and Evi is very, very smart. Based on the same Nuance voice recognition technology found in Siri and the licensing of which accounts for Evi’s $0.99 price tag in the App Store, Evi draws upon a database of nearly a billion facts as well as integration with Yelp and other services to deliver an array of information that seems to compare favorably to Siri’s abilities. Install Evi on an iPhone 4S and compare it to Evi. Ask “How do I make apple pie?”. Siri is unable to provide a direct answer and so asks whether you want to search the web. Evi provides a list of recipes with web links. Ask “Who was President when Queen Elizabeth II was born”. Siri is unable to provide an answer and suggests performing a web search. Evi determines who Queen Elizabeth II is, when she was born, the dates when she will have been a teenager and then compares this against which US presidents were in office over that time, delivering the results of both serving US presidents during those years. Not bad huh. Evi offers the option of voice or text input, local results for the United States and United Kingdom, and a built-in browser view for quick access to web links from results. iTunes U for iPad Retools the Learning Experience

In the second half of Apple’s education-focused media event today, the company turned its attention to iTunes U, the company’s free educational podcast section in the iTunes Store. Eddy Cue took the stage to announce that over 1,000 universities are currently using iTunes U, with the program’s content having seen over 700 million downloads to date. The new iTunes U app advances iTunes U from audio and video lectures to a full-fledged learning app , allowing non-traditional students access to huge amounts of free content but more importantly for Apple, allowing schools to adopt iTunes U as a learning platform. The all-new iTunes U app lets teachers create and manage courses including essential components such as lectures, assignments, books, quizzes and syllabuses and offer them to millions of iOS users around the world. Courses are created via the iTunes U Course Manager, a web-based tool that allows teachers to build a course that includes a syllabus, handouts, quizzes, and other items. Course materials are hosted by Apple and available to anyone taking the course — by default, courses are open and available to anyone, though it appears schools can restrict their courses to only their students. For users, iTunes U for iOS has more than 100 courses already optimized for iOS, with more on the way. A quick perusal of the app shows classes from Yale, Duke, MIT, and Stanford — including Paul Hegarty’s well-regarded iPad and iPhone App Development course [ Direct Link ]. iTunes U lets you take a complete course on your iPad. View the course overview, instructor biography, and course outline. Read posts and keep track of your completed assignments. Watch videos directly within the app, read books, and view all your course notes in one place. Receive push notifications alerting you to new posts from the instructor. And iCloud keeps your notes, highlights, and bookmarks up to date on all your devices. iTunes U is a free download for iPad and iPhone on the App Store [ Direct Link ]. Continue reading

Sharp Out as iPad 3 Display Supplier?

Even as some sources are claiming that iPad 3 production is underway with Sharp providing the displays for the device, Korea’s Electronic Times reports ( via Patently Apple ) that Sharp has failed to meet Apple’s requirements and is out as a display supplier. According to the report, Samsung and LG will be providing the displays for the iPad 3. An industry source said on January 9, “LCD manufacturers started mass production and supply of LCD panels for the iPad3 late last year. Samsung Electronics’ LCD business unit was the first to start mass production, and LG Display has participated in mass production with full capacity, beginning this year.” Sharp has competed with Samsung Electronics and LG Display over the development of display panels for the iPad3, but reportedly failed to pass Apple’s approval process for mass production. Apple is said to be requiring at least 65 million iPad 3 display panels for 2012, with an initial batch of 5 million being produced for launch. A decision by Apple not to go with Sharp for the iPad 3 display could have consequences for the device’s design, as the two companies have been reported by several sources to be working together on Sharp’s indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) technology to achieve thinner, lower power displays. If Apple does utilize more traditional low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) displays from Toshiba and LG, that decision could require a dual light bar system to support the higher resolution of the iPad 3, thus necessitating the slightly thicker profile that has been rumored for the device. OS X 10.7.3 Build 11D42 Seeded to Developers

Following in the footsteps of yesterday’s release of iOS 5.1 Beta 3 , Apple today seeded a new version of OS X 10.7.3 to registered Mac developers. The new version, termed Build 11D42, comes three weeks after the previous build , but the development team’s work was undoubtedly slowed due to the holidays. According to those familiar with the update, Apple is asking developers to focus their testing on the following areas: Address Book, iCal, Mail, Spotlight, and Safari. The delta version of the new build for updating from OS X 10.7.2 weighs in at 989.75 MB, while a combo version good for updating from any previous version of OS X Lion weighs in at 1.26 GB. OS X 10.7.3 will be Apple’s next free maintenance update for OS X Lion users. The current version, OS X 10.7.2, was released in mid-October and brought support for Apple’s new iCloud services. OS X 10.7.3 developer builds have so far released a few hints of Apple’s work, including drivers for new graphics cards that could appear in an updated Mac Pro and active efforts on HiDPI display modes that could come to fruition in a “Retina” MacBook Pro rumored for release early this year. Evidence of Quad-Core Chips Shows Up in iOS 5.1 Betas

9to5Mac reports that evidence of support for quad-core processors has shown up in beta versions of iOS 5.1, lending support to claims that Apple’s forthcoming A6 chips will see a doubling in the number of processing cores. The references to quad-core iPhone and iPad chips come by way of a hidden panel that describes cores that are supported by iOS device hardware. The updated core management software includes an option of “/cores/core.3,” and this represents a fourth available processing core… The report notes that single-core processors such as the A4 found in the iPhone 4 and original iPad fall under a “cores/core.0″ designation, while dual-core processors such as the A5 in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are covered by a “/cores/core.1″ designation. The “/cores/core.3″ reference thus suggests compatibility with a quad-core chip. Apple’s A6 system-on-a-chip has been rumored several times to carry a quad-core processor, and has been presumed to be set for inclusion in the company’s next-generation iPad and iPhone models. There have, however, been some questions about whether the production timeline for the A6 would support its inclusion in the iPad 3, which is rumored for a release around March of this year. iPod Shuffle Signed by Steve Jobs Available on eBay [Mac Blog]

A 4th generation iPod Shuffle, apparently signed by Steve Jobs himself, is for sale on eBay . The signature on the iPod is similar to Jobs’s signature , but the item doesn’t include any guarantee or certificate of authenticity, though the seller does offer this story for how the signature was obtained: As part of a “innovators of tomorrow” program, myself and a 3 of my colleagues were invited to attend an in-house Apple event. Before hand, we received complimentary Apple products, including an iPod Shuffle and iTunes credits. As usual, the topics covered touched base on were a number of Apple’s latest innovations, as well as a sneak peak to future plans. After the conference, we were given the opportunity to talk with Steve himself about the shift in technology to more companion-oriented devices. As the discussion wrapped up, one person in our group asked if Steve would mind signing our iPods. As the conversation went: “I hear you’re not really one to give autographs, but I just gotta ask….will you sign my iPod? It’s fine if you don’t want to. I’m not normally one to even ask for autographs”. Steve: *chuckling* “it’s quite alright. You heard that about me?? well I wouldn’t say that I don’t like giving autographs, I guess I was never comfortable with the idea solely taking credit for something, which is to me what an autograph might imply. To be honest, I think I’m the last person who should sign something. A writer signing a book I can understand, but I think if anybody within our company should sign something, it should be members from our R&D team and all the others responsible for product innovation. It’s unfortunate that they all can’t receive the same level recognition. But I suppose it’s easier this way though??….you would need a pretty big iPod to fit all those signatures”. He was very candid and very down to earth. To my knowledge, we were the only ones lucky enough to get Steve’s ever-so-rare signature. As of 10:45AM Pacific time, the bid for the signed Shuffle was just over $4,000. Continue reading
