Energizer Introduces New Wrap-Around iPhone Chargers [iOS Blog]

Energizer has introduced a pair of new 5-watt iPhone chargers that aim to keep a handle on charging cables when not in use. The car charger has the wrap-around cable storage, and a nifty “FindMe” light that illuminates the inside of the USB port for easy plugging in a dark car. The wall charger includes flip-down blades as well as a blue light that turns off when the iPhone is fully charged. The wall adapter is $17 on Amazon , $12 less than the Apple-branded wall-adapter . The Energizer adapters only push 5 watts of power, plenty for an iPhone but it will charge an iPad — particularly the new iPad — very slowly. The car charger has been announced but doesn’t have a shipping date. Continue reading

Apple and Samsung Claim 99% of Profits Among Top Mobile Phone Vendors

Asymco ‘s Horace Dediu has released his data on operating profits among the eight top mobile phone vendors for the first quarter of 2012, finding that Apple and Samsung together now hold 99% of the profits with Apple representing the lion’s share at 73%. Apple’s share was down slightly from 75% in the previous quarter , but Samsung boosted its share from 16% to 26% to shut out nearly all other vendors. Among the other six vendors, only HTC managed to eke out a profit, taking 1% of the total industry profits. Research in Motion, LG, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia each failed to turn a profit on their handset businesses. The rise of Apple and Samsung at the expense of all of the other major vendors comes as the mobile phone market continues to expand and more expensive smartphones make up an increasing percentage of overall mobile phone sales. Consequently, Apple and Samsung share growth is coming even as the total pool of profits is surging. Over the past two years, profits taken by these top eight vendors has risen from $5.3 billion to $14.4 billion, driven in large part by carrier subsidies worth hundreds of dollars on each of the growing number of smartphones sold. Logitech Announces Solar-Powered iPad Keyboard Case

Logitech today announced the launch of its Solar Keyboard Folio , a folding case for the new iPad and iPad 2 that incorporates a solar-powered Bluetooth keyboard. Similar to Logitech’s solar keyboards for Mac and PC, the Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio includes onboard solar cells that charge the built-in Bluetooth keyboard in any light, whether indoors or outdoors. When fully charged, the battery lasts for up to two years, even in complete darkness (based on a average use of two hours per day). Much like Apple’s Smart Cover, the folio also folds to serve as a stand for the iPad, with two positions available: an upright orientation offering full access to the keyboard and a more reclined position that offers access to only the bottom row of the keyboard for media playback controls. Logitech’s Solar Keyboard Folio will carry a retail price of $129.99 and will launch in the United States and Europe later this month. Continue reading

EA Killing Rock Band for iPhone, Game Will Be Unplayable for Current Owners [iOS Blog]

EA is telling owners of Rock Band for iPhone that as of May 31, the game will “no longer be playable on your device.” Most users probably expect that a game they paid $4.99 for — and that is still on sale, with no suggestion that the game will be useless in a month — wouldn’t suddenly stop working, especially when Rock Band offers a number of song packs as in-app purchases. At the very least you would think that EA would be able to just leave the original Rock Band alone, so those who bought it and paid for IAP songs can continue to at least use it even if future updates aren’t in the cards. Perhaps there’s a reason for this, like a licensing issue with the music, but at any rate if you’re still a fan of the first Rock Band on iOS you’ll have until May 31st to continue enjoying it. Servers being shut down and dropping support for games isn’t a new phenomenon, but in the increasingly more digital age of video games you’ll just have to keep in mind that the experience might be finite unlike physical copies of games which will last for eternity as long as you have the hardware to play it. Rock Band hasn’t been updated since December of 2010, as its sequel, Rock Band Reloaded was released around the same time. EA’s website for Rock Band for iPhone provides no indication that the game will be shut down. Continue reading

Apple’s 1984 Internal Inspirational Video with Steve Jobs as Franklin Roosevelt

Network World shares a rather unique internal Apple video from 1984 intended to inspire Apple employees as the Macintosh sought to supplant IBM in the workplace. The short black-and-white film is set to a World War II theme and features a brief appearance by Steve Jobs in the role of U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Entitled “1944,” the almost 9-minute full version was Apple’s in-house takeoff on “1984,” the iconic first Macintosh TV ad that caused a sensation during that year’s Super Bowl. Set as a World War II tale of good vs. IBM, it is a broadcast-quality production (said to have cost $50,000) that was designed to fire up Apple’s international sales force at a 1984 meeting in Hawaii. A copy of “1944″ was provided to me by one-time Apple employee Craig Elliott, now CEO of Pertino Networks, a cloud-computing startup located two blocks from Apple in Cupertino. Jobs’ appearance, complete with fake accent to initially disguise his true identity, comes at roughly 5:20 into the film. Continue reading

Upcoming Saskatchewan Apple Retail Store Fills Huge Void in Coverage [Mac Blog]

ifoAppleStore reports that Apple is planning to open a new retail store in the Cornwall Centre shopping mall in Regina, Saskatchewan. The location is a notable one for being the first in the vast province in the heart of Canada, with no other Apple retail stores located within a 700-mile radius. Cornwall Centre is located in city center and has 90 retailers in an enclosed mall. City planning documents mention the new store, but the exact location within the mall isn’t known. Based on construction schedules, the store could open by November 2012. Regina, the provincial capital with a population of roughly 200,000, is the second-largest city and part of the second-largest metropolitan area in Saskatchewan, just behind Saskatoon. Upcoming Saskatchewan Apple Retail Store Fills Huge Void in Coverage [Updated] [Mac Blog]

Update : As noted in our forums and confirmed by The Regina Leader-Post ( via iPhoneinCanada.ca ), the forthcoming store is actually a reseller and not an official Apple retail store. Regina’s Cornwall Centre is getting a store selling Apple products — though, contrary to rumours that circulated Tuesday morning on the web — it won’t be an Apple store. Krista Bebeau, the downtown mall’s marketing manager, said it will an outlet of a firm called iWorld Connect — the website of which (http://iworldconnect.com/) confirms the company is opening a store in Regina. Apple, Motorola both try for summary judgment in US lawsuit

Apple and Motorola in near-tandem have motioned for summary judgment in Apple’s Wisconsin-based lawsuit over alleged Motorola violations of patents. The actions, both filed on Friday, would have Apple try to have some of its patent claims validated while Motorola wanted the majority of Apple’s patent arguments ruled invalid. Most of Motorola’s objections center around Apple’s attempts to find Motorola violating its commitment to FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) patent licensing for 3G and Wi-Fi, effectively shutting down the lawsuit itself…. Apple Temporarily Closing Some U.S. Stores for Security Grate Installations [Mac Blog]

Apple closed a number of U.S. retail stores last week, and is closing another half dozen more this week for undisclosed renovations. All of the stores closing are street-level locations and the most likely reason is to retrofit the stores with Apple’s new security grate system . Apple closed a number of other stores last fall for the same reason . Security grating barely visible at Apple’s 4th Street store in Berkeley, California The stores are closed for between 7 to 10 days each, and locations closed this week include Los Gatos (CA), Coconut Point (FL), Leawood (KS), Friendly Center (NC), Manhasset (NY), and Bridgeport Village (OR). Last week, Bethesda Row (MD), Village Pointe (NE), and Crocker Park (OH), and perhaps others were all closed, apparently for the same reason. Continue reading

Apple "Discussed" Putting a Hardware Keyboard on the iPhone [iOS Blog]

According to former Apple executive Tony Fadell — these days remaking the thermostat — Apple’s designers had extensive discussions about including a hardware keyboard on the iPhone, but ultimately decided against it. Fadell discussed the iPhone design process in a sit-down interview on Josh Topolsky’s On The Verge show. I wanted to try [a touchscreen keyboard]… I wanted it to work. It made sense that you wanted a full screen, you didn’t want a keyboard. Fadell also mentions the other designs for the iPhone, including the iPod + Phone concept using the iPod click wheel as a controller , but noted that the team ultimately discarded that concept because the control scheme was too restricting. Apple’s designers make many prototypes that never hit the light of day. We didn’t know it at the time, but the iPod with click-wheel dial that Steve Jobs jokingly showed at the original iPhone announcement wasn’t too far off from something Apple had actually created. In his biography, we learned that Jobs had set up two competing teams to find the best iPhone design. One based its designs off the existing iPod, while the other designed a brand new touchscreen system that ultimately became the iPhone. Continue reading
