Retina update also coming to MacBook Air, sources say

Apple will also announce Retina display-equipped MacBook Airs at this year’s WWDC, supply chain sources for 9to5Mac say. The company is already believed to be preparing news of Retina MacBook Pros and iMacs, and an Air would complete the lineup of Macs with built-in displays. 9to5 claims that unlike the Pro, though, the Air’s update will be almost entirely about the display, rather than incorporating any major design changes…. Upcoming Saskatchewan Apple Retail Store Fills Huge Void in Coverage [Mac Blog]

ifoAppleStore reports that Apple is planning to open a new retail store in the Cornwall Centre shopping mall in Regina, Saskatchewan. The location is a notable one for being the first in the vast province in the heart of Canada, with no other Apple retail stores located within a 700-mile radius. Cornwall Centre is located in city center and has 90 retailers in an enclosed mall. City planning documents mention the new store, but the exact location within the mall isn’t known. Based on construction schedules, the store could open by November 2012. Regina, the provincial capital with a population of roughly 200,000, is the second-largest city and part of the second-largest metropolitan area in Saskatchewan, just behind Saskatoon. Scott Forstall and Mickey Drexler Net Millions in Apple Stock Sales [Mac Blog]

A pair of filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reveal that Apple executive Scott Fortsall and board member Mickey Drexler each sold off tens of thousands of shares of Apple stock on Friday, netting millions of dollars each. Forstall, who serves as senior vice president of iOS Software and has been a fixture in Apple’s keynote presentations and media events, sold off 64,151 shares of Apple stock on Friday, netting roughly $38.7 million. Forstall gained 120,000 shares of Apple stock last month as a 2008 retention bonus of restricted stock units converted to actual stock. 55,849 shares were immediately sold off at that time to account for the taxes due on the conversion, and Forstall held on to the remaining shares until last Friday. Following Friday’s transaction, Forstall holds 2,988 shares of Apple stock, worth roughly $1.75 million at today’s share price and the same number of shares he held prior to last month’s vesting of his 2008 retention bonus. Forstall is also in line to receive a number of other stock grants should he remain with the company over the next several years, including a 150,000-unit grant that will vest in equal portions next year and in 2016. A separate grant of 100,000 units will vest in 2014. Meanwhile, longtime Apple board member Mickey Drexler, who serves as Chairman and CEO of J. Crew and was previously President and CEO of The Gap, has cashed in on stock options dating back nearly a decade in order to reap a substantial windfall. Drexler exercised a set of 20,000 options from 2003 priced at $9.16 each and a second set of 20,000 options from 2004 priced at $14.205 each, selling off all 40,000 shares on Friday for $24.1 million. After accounting for the exercise prices on the options, Drexler netted close to $23.7 million. Drexler continues to hold 584 shares of Apple stock worth roughly $384,000 at today’s share price. LaCie Hub Now Shipping, Connects eSATA Drives via Thunderbolt

Announced at CES earlier this year , the LaCie’s new Thunderbolt eSATA Hub is now shipping . The device allows external eSATA drives to be connected to Thunderbolt equipped Macs. The daisy-chainable hub includes two eSATA ports and retails for $199 . eSATA is a high performance drive connector used to connect external hard drives to your computer. eSATA has never been a standard option on Macs, but is a faster alternative to USB 2.0 and Firewire and is commonly found on high performance external drives and storage arrays. For those who are have existing eSATA drives or are waiting for Thunderbolt drives to drop in price, this could be a good interim solution. The Hub isn’t yet available for order on LaCie’s website . We spoke to someone at LaCie’s sales center who told us the first batch had sold out, but that more were to arrive in a few days. Interested parties can contact LaCie sales directly to place an order for one of these backordered units, and it’ll ship out when LaCie receives them. Continue reading

Walter Isaacson Says Jobs’ Rage Over Android Was Real

Steve Jobs biographer Walter Isaacson says Jobs’ anger over Android was real and not “for show” as alleged by Google’s Larry Page in an interview this week. Macworld UK attended a lecture Isaacson gave at the Royal Institution and the biographer said that Jobs felt Android’s similarity to iOS was “history repeating itself”, and compared it to Jobs’ feeling that Microsoft’s Windows was a rip-off of the Macintosh. He did the integrated system again, iPod, iPad, and it worked, “but what happens? Google rips it off”. Isaacson continued: “It’s almost copied verbatim by Android. And then they licence it around promiscuously. And then Android starts surpassing Apple in market share, and this totally infuriated him. It wasn’t a matter of money. He said: ‘You can’t pay me off, I’m here to destroy you’.” Isaacson went on to say that he believes that Tim Cook will handle things differently and “will settle that lawsuit.” Apple is currently involved in a number of lawsuits over Android with manufacturers around the world. Apple Gains Certification to Sell Brazilian-Assembled iPad 2, New iPad Certification Pending

Back in late February, we noted that Apple had begun selling Brazilian-assembled 8 GB iPhone 4 models in that country, yielding the first fruits from Foxconn’s production lines starting up in the country. Foxconn has also been said to be gearing up for iPad production in Brazil, with domestic production of the iPhone and iPad providing a means by which Apple could avoid hefty import taxes in one of the world’s most populous countries. While Apple has yet to begin selling Brazilian-assembled versions of the iPhone 4S or even give any sign that it intends to do so, MacRumors has learned that Apple has been making better progress with the iPad. Specifically, the company has already received certification to sell Brazilian-assembled models of the 16 GB iPad 2 in Brazil alongside the current Chinese-assembled models. Apple already sells the full line of iPad 2 models in Brazil, but only the 16 GB models will continue to be available once the new iPad launches and it appears that Apple will be adding domestically-assembled models to the mix at that time. Regarding the new iPad, certifications for all models of the new iPad are still pending for both Brazilian- and Chinese-assembled models, but it is clear that the company is making preparations to launch the device with at least some domestic production in Brazil. Apple will, however, be unable to launch the new iPad in Brazil until appropriate certifications are received, and the company has yet to announce a launch date for the device. As with the iPhone, Chinese-assembled versions of iPad models manufactured for sale in Brazil would carry the BZ/A suffix on their model numbers as seen with most Apple products in that market, while their Brazilian-assembled counterparts would carry a BR/A suffix. Apple Sends Out Refund Information to Australian iPad Customers

Apple has started sending out emails to Australian customers who may have been misled about the advertised “4G” capabilities of the new iPad. Apple explains in the email that the new iPad is not compatible with Australian LTE or WiMAX networks, but does support “fast cellular networks” such as HSPA, HSPA+, and DC-HSDPA The offer for returns is a response to complaints by Australian regulators that Apple’s use of the term “4G” in its Australian marketing may have misled some customers into thinking that the new iPad would work on Australian LTE/WiMAX networks. Apple is allowing Australians who purchased the new iPad before March 28th to return it for a full refund. Continue reading
