Google MapsGL gains enhanced 3D buildings
Google has further enhanced its use of WebGL to now add more 3D perspective to buildings seen on its MapsGL project, an alternative version of Google Maps (which received the improvement in March). The improvements now add a “parallax” view that allows users to pan around buildings and see them from different angles while still in overhead view. The buildings become translucent in order to avoid obscuring roadways or other landmarks while panning, and are most noticeable on taller buildings…. Continue reading

Mozilla working on click-to-play feature to stop plugin exploits
Mozilla developers are working on a new Firefox feature to block the automated display of content that requires a plugin, like Flash videos, Java applets or PDF files. The update should protect users from attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in browser plugins to install malware on their computers. Continue reading

Adobe launches first beta of Flash 11.3 for Macs
Adobe has released a public beta of it’s next iteration of Flash Player, version 11.3.300.214, which features improvements to the desktop player, as well as enhancements to AIR Mobile for developers. In the release notes, Adobe mentions that it has “relaxed” the driver gating hardware acceleration to 2006, which may mean that older cards and Intel graphic chipsets such as the GMA 950 will gain hardware acceleration in the final release…. Analyst anticipates 4-inch unibody iPhone, iPad mini
The next-generation iPhone may employ a unibody design, similar to the way MacBooks are currently constructed, says Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White. The claim is based on a tour of suppliers in China and Taiwan, who he adds gave the impression that some parts would go into production in June, paving the way for a launch sometime in the fall…. Acer outs USB-powered C120 pico projector
Acer has just begun shipping its C120 pico projector. The portable device is optionally USB-powered and has a native 864×480 resolution, but can also show 1280×800-pixel images. The DLP projector can produce 100 ANSI lumens of brightness from its LED lamp, though that number goes down to 75 when only on USB power…. Continue reading

Intel previews Z77 chipset for Ivy Bridge: USB 3 and PCIe 3
The first ingredient to Intel’s Ivy Bridge launch manifested on Monday through its Z77 desktop mainboard chipset. Better known as Panther Point, it can use existing Core chips made using Sandy Bridge but is designed to take advantage of the imminent new chips. Internet Explorer shows signs of recovering web share
New NetApplications data has shown that Internet Explorer might be on a sustained, if slight, recovery in web share. Microsoft’s browser gained almost exactly one point to hit 53.83 percent of browser use online. The gain roughly mirrored one from January and saw IE at its highest position since October….
