Id Software’s RAGE Arrives on Mac App Store [Mac Blog]

As the Mac becomes more popular, the arrival of A-List titles to the platform is beginning to become a more common occurrence. The latest top-shelf game to hit the Mac is Id Software’s RAGE, which has gone live both on the Mac App Store [ Direct Link ] and on publisher Aspyr’s GameAgent online store . The game takes place more than 100 years after the impact of an asteroid destroys most life on earth. The player awakens after being frozen in cryo-stasis without any memory of who he is or what he is supposed to do. The game plays out in a world similar to Mad Max and the like, with the player fighting enemies, making allies, and trying to find his place in an utterly wrecked planet. Potential purchasers should note that the game is titled the “Campaign Edition” because it only includes the single player campaign, not the multiplayer components. Priced at $39.99, the well-reviewed post-apocalyptic shoot-em-up has some hefty system requirements , asking for at least OS X 10.7.2 and an Intel Core 2 Duo and a long list of graphics cards — most significantly, however, integrated video chipsets are not supported. RAGE: Campaign Edition is $39.99 on the Mac App Store and weighs in at nearly 13GB. Purchasers are strongly encouraged to double check their system requirements before purchasing. Apple Grabs Another Gaming PR Executive for App Store [iOS Blog]

MCV reports ( via The Next Web ) that Apple has nabbed yet another gaming PR executive, this time hiring Microsoft’s European chief of Xbox Live marketing Robin Burrowes to oversee App Store marketing in Europe. Burrowes worked at Xbox for seven years, and was in charge of Xbox Live. He was one of the execs promoting the latest Xbox dashboard update, even attending London Games Conference and Gamescom last year. Prior to Xbox, he has worked for MSN and HMV. He joins Apple this year in charge of marketing the App Store for iTunes Europe. Apple has been drawing PR and marketing talent from the gaming industry for some time now as it seeks to bolster iOS’s positioning as a competitive gaming platform. Last year, the company poached longtime Nintendo executive Rob Saunders as well as Nick Grange, who came from Activision after stints at Microsoft and EA. Continue reading

Apple Ends $100 Printer Rebate Program for New Mac Purchases

Since at least 2004, Apple has offered a rebate program that has typically offered users a $100 rebate when they purchase a new Mac and an eligible printer directly from Apple. The program was typically offered as a three-month program that was consistently renewed upon expiration, although in recent years the company shifted toward a perpetual program while reserving the right to discontinue it at any time. It now appears that Apple has discontinued the program entirely, as retail sources have indicated to both MacRumors and 9to5Mac that Apple has ended the program as of today. From a notice to staff members: Printer Rebates Ending on January 17 Effective Tuesday, January 17, the printer rebate will no longer be offered. Monday, January 16 will be the last day customers can get a rebate on a qualifying printer when purchased with a Mac. Customers will have 90 days from the date of purchase to submit rebate claims. An additional 30 days will be given to correct invalid claims. The Apple Retail Store and the Apple Online Store will continue to sell printers, albeit without a rebate offer. U.S. and CA only: Wednesday, May 16 is the last day the online Apple Rebate Tool will be available to submit rebates. Customers should submit their claims according to the terms of the promotion. Apple previously offered a number of rebate programs on various products, but with the discontinuation of the printer rebate program, it appears that the company has eliminated rebates entirely. iWork and MobileMe rebates disappeared in April 2011 , and the company had previously offered rebates on the products such as Mac OS X and iLife combination purchases, Mac OS and Microsoft Office combination purchases, and others. Apple previous Back to School rebate program has also been replaced with an iTunes Store/Mac App Store gift card . Apple continues to offer several printers as optional add-ons when configuring a new Mac in the online store, specifically promoting AirPrint-compatible models, but the printers are being offered at regular retail prices with no promotional rebates or other discounts. iPad 3 Media Event Planned for Early February?

Apple’s education-focused media event isn’t until Thursday, but Japanese blog Macotakara reports that Apple is already making plans for an early February event to introduce the iPad 3 ahead of an early March launch. According to asian supplier and a source in United States, Apple seems to prepare to hold Special Event in early February. Because Chinese factory will be in holiday of New Year, then new product is concidered to be released in early March. An approximately one-month gap between introduction and availability would be significantly longer than for the iPad 2, which was introduced on March 2, 2011 with availability coming just nine days later on March 11 . The original iPad didn’t launch until more than two months after its January 2010 debut , although Apple tends toward longer gaps between introduction and launch for new product categories in order to accommodate the regulatory approval process without risking leaks of product details. Macotakara has had a mixed track record in the past, but the site’s most recent report regarding the start of iPad 3 production ahead of an early March debut was corroborated by Bloomberg just a few days later. Apple Files New German Lawsuit Targeting Ten Samsung Smartphones [iOS Blog]

Bloomberg reports that Apple has filed a new lawsuit in Germany against Samsung, seeking to ban sales of ten different smartphone models over alleged design infringement. Apple Inc. (AAPL) filed another suit in Germany, seeking to ban sales of Samsung Electronics (005930) Co.’s smartphone models, including the Galaxy S Plus and the S II. The suit targeting 10 smartphones was filed in the Dusseldorf Regional Court and is based on Apple design rights Apple in Europe, court spokesman Peter Schuetz said via phone today. Apple also started a separate suit against five Samsung tablet computer models related to a September ruling banning the Galaxy 10.1., he said. Germany has already been the site of a significant amount of legal action between Apple and Samsung, with Apple winning an injunction barring the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in that country. Samsung has apparently circumvented that injunction with the release of a design-tweaked Galaxy Tab 10.1 for the German market, although Apple continues to press forward with its legal efforts against Samsung’s tablets. Apple to Launch ‘Garageband for e-books’ on Thursday? [Updated]

Apple’s education-focused media event is scheduled for this Thursday, and more details seem to be leaking out. Earlier this evening, the Wall Street Journal reported that McGraw-Hill has been working with Apple on this project since last June. Now, ArsTechnica claims that one of the key components of Thursday’s announcement is a new publishing tool for eBooks. The current state of software tools continues to frustrate authors and publishers alike, with several authors telling Ars that they wish Apple or some other vendor would make a simple app that makes the process as easy as creating a song in GarageBand. Our sources say Apple will announce such a tool on Thursday. Apple is said to be announcing support for the ePub 3 standard as well, and hopes to open the door for publishers to easily create interactive e-books. Steve Jobs is said to have been intimately involved with the project for several years. Apple’s media event is being held at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City on Thursday, January 19. It is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Eastern / 7:00 AM Pacific, and Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue has been reported to be a key figure in the presentation. Update : Fortune claims that the report by Ars Technica , specifically including information from Inkling CEO Matt MacInnis, was “seriously overhyped”. In particular, Fortune ‘s Philip Elmer-DeWitt takes exception to the claims that Apple will release a “GarageBand for e-books” to enable simple digital textbook creation, instead claiming that the reference was to a sample app that will be demoed by Apple as an example of what can be done on the platform. MacInnis also mentioned GarageBand in our interview. But what he was describing was a sample iPad textbook, produced in-house and packed with pedological bells and whistles, that would serve as a reference design for textbook publishers, much in the way GarageBand for the iPad showed iOS developers what the new platform could do. MacInnis does expect Apple to unveil new tools for creating iPad textbooks, along with a new content repository to make e-textbooks easily available to teachers. But the tools are not a “GarageBand for e-books.” And according to MacInnis, they’re designed to support the textbook industry, not to do an end-run around it. Continue reading

Call of Duty Elite iPhone App Arrives Tomorrow [iOS Blog]

Call of Duty Elite launched last fall to coincide with the rollout of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, the fastest-selling entertainment product of all time. Elite is the online counterpart to MW3, offering stats tracking, in-game competitions, game strategies and more. The service had some rough moments at launch, but most parts of Elite are up and running now. Chacko Sonny, head of Beachhead Studio — the Activision Blizzard division in charge of Elite — explained that the app includes four main components, mirroring most of the major features from the Elite website: – Career Summary: A “back of the baseball card” assessment of the players stats, and a way to look up other players cards and statistics – Recent Matches: “Fantasy football analysis” of recent games played – Challenges: Track challenges in-game (achievements for performing certain tasks or leveling up a gun) and allows players to find the quickest ways to level up and have that information by their side while playing. – Custom Classes: Perhaps the most useful feature, gives the player the ability to make any changes to custom classes and push those changes to the game. Sonny noted this was the most common way that beta testers used the app. Sonny told MacRumors that with Elite available on three very different platforms — console, the web, and now the iPhone — the difference in form factor between the interfaces was important: “it’s smaller from an interface standpoint. We didn’t want to shoehorn the website or console experience onto a smartphone.” Beachhead’s designers made sure the Elite app felt native to the iPhone. Further, Sonny emphasized that the Elite iPhone app is a 1.0 release and that the service will progress both on the console, the web, and the mobile apps. We view this as the foundation. We want to hear from the community: how do they use this? What parts do they like? What parts aren’t as useful? We want to drive additional development going forward from people who play the game every single day. That’s going to help us deliver a better set of iterated features going forward, and for the forthcoming tablet version as well. The app will be free, and will be available to all Call of Duty Elite users — there is a premium Elite membership available that includes free downloadable content and some other goodies, but that doesn’t affect the mobile app — though there is no sign-up from the app itself. Users must enroll via the website or the Elite app on either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 first. The Call of Duty Elite app only works when connected to the Internet via 3G or Wi-Fi. Call of Duty Elite for iPhone launches tomorrow, Tuesday the 10th, on the App Store. An iPad version is promised “shortly thereafter”. Continue reading

Verizon Drops $2 ‘Convenience Fee’ Due to Complaints [iOS Blog]

As noted by The Verge , Verizon has announced that they are not going to charge the $2 ‘convenience fee’ that was originally planned to go into effect on January 15th. Verizon Wireless has decided it will not institute the fee for online or telephone single payments that was announced earlier this week. The company made the decision in response to customer feedback about the plan, which was designed to improve the efficiency of those transactions. The company continues to encourage customers to take advantage of the numerous simple and convenient payment methods it provides. “At Verizon, we take great care to listen to our customers. Based on their input, we believe the best path forward is to encourage customers to take advantage of the best and most efficient options, eliminating the need to institute the fee at this time,” said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless. The company had planned to charge customers $2 for one-time payments made online or over the phone. Continue reading
