Ashton Kutcher Spotted Wearing Steve Jobs’ Trademark Wardrobe [Mac Blog]
The casting of Ashton Kutcher in the role of Steve Jobs in an upcoming independent film focusing on the Apple co-founder’s life has certainly generated a significant amount of attention for the project, despite the fact that the film is a completely separate effort from the high-profile planned Sony Pictures film to be based on Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of Jobs. With filming on the indie film starring Kutcher having already begun with the star on break from his work on the TV show Two and a Half Men , TMZ shares a few photos of Kutcher seen wearing Jobs’ trademark outfit of a black turtleneck, jeans, and sneakers. The photos were reportedly taken on Friday while Kutcher was walking to the set of the film. Kutcher has been said by some to bear an uncanny resemblance to a young Steve Jobs, particularly with having adopted a close copy of Jobs’ hairstyle and facial hair from those days. Jobs did not adopt his trademark wardrobe until a number of years later, but Kutcher is clearly taking on that aspect of Jobs’ identity for the role as well. Continue reading →
Apple Tweaking More Icons, Upgrading to HiDPI Sizes in OS X 10.7.4
Apple is continuing the process of preparing OS X Lion for Macs offering ultra high-resolution “HiDPI” screens, upgrading several application icons to higher resolutions in yesterday’s public release of OS X 10.7.4. AppleInsider pointed to TextEdit as one example, with Apple having upgraded its icon’s previous maximum size of 512×512 under OS X 10.7.3 to 1024×1024 in OS X 10.7.4. But the larger image 1024×1024 is also listed as measuring at 512×512 points, indicating that it is indeed being targeted for screens measuring at double the resolution of current displays in each dimension. Under OS X 10.7.3, the TextEdit icon file included four different image sizes: 16×16, 32×32, 128×128, and 512×512. With the move to OS X 10.7.4, the icon now comes in ten different sizes: 16×16, 32×32 HiDPI, 32×32, 64×64 HiDPI, 128×128, 256×256 HiDPI, 256×256, 512×512 HiDPI, 512×512, and 1024×1024 HiDPI. TextEdit is not the only application to see an upgrade, however, as Automator has not only seen new HiDPI icons appear in OS X 10.7.4, but the icon itself has also undergone some tweaking. In OS X 10.7.4, the Automator robot has taken on a somewhat darker tone, with the glossiness being toned down and the previously silver arms, legs, and pipe now appearing black. The tweaked design had previously surfaced in developer previews of OS X Mountain Lion, but is now included in OS X Lion. Automator icon in OS X 10.7.3 (left) and OS X 10.7.4 (right) Like TextEdit, Automator has seen an increase in the number of image sizes included in the icon file, although to a smaller extent. Under OS X 10.7.3, the Automator icon included the same four basic sizes: 16×16, 32×32, 128×128, and 512×512. But under OS X 10.7.4, the new icon now comes in six different sizes: 16×16, 32×32, 128×128, 256×256, 512×512, and 1024×1024 HiDPI. Retina-sized graphics have been appearing with increasing frequency in both OS X Lion and developer previews of OS X Mountain Lion. In line with those changes, Apple has been rumored to be launching a Retina display 15-inch MacBook Pro in the near future, with a 2880×1800 display measuring in at twice the resolution of the current 1440×900 display in each dimension. As with the move to Retina displays on Apple’s iOS devices, content would appear at the same physical size on these new displays as on current displays, but with much sharper image quality for applications bundling resources supporting the HiDPI mode. Even applications that do not immediately update their resources to HiDPI quality should see improvements in sharpness, as Apple will undoubtedly include the same font scaling improvements used in iOS to automatically scale up text in applications to HiDPI resolution. (Thanks, Mario!) Continue reading →

Old Meets New With Etch A Sketch iPad Case [iOS Blog]
The Etch A Sketch has been a cultural icon for more than 50 years. These days, the iPad has replaced the red tablet as the cultural icon, but a new Kickstarter project aims to combine the two. The Etcher combines a red iPad case complete with sketching knobs and an app that completes the Etch A Sketch experience. They have even obtained a license from Ohio Art, the company that makes the real Etch A Sketch. Of course, it erases if you shake it. We are negotiating with a number of contract manufacturers. The most intriguing option is Ohio Art’s invitation for us to use the same factory that manufactures the classic Etch A Sketch. Although it is more expensive than some the other options, we like the fact that they already know and understand Etch A Sketch. For instance, they know exactly what color red to use for the plastic–they simply use the same plastic they use in production! The team behind the Etcher is aiming to fulfill the first orders by the end of October and they plan to publish an open source SDK for accessing the Etcher’s controls from within other iOS apps. The Etcher is available for preorder on Kickstarter for $60, with free shipping within the United States. Continue reading →

Apple Issues Update to OS X Mountain Lion Developer Preview 3
Apple issued a software update for OS X Mountain Lion Developer Preview 3 this evening. Apple released Developer Preview 3 to developers. The update brings the build number of Mountain Lion up to 12A193i (from 12A178q). If you already have Mountain Lion Developer Preview 3 installed, choose Software Update from the Apple menu to download the update from the Mac App Store. Download Xcode 4.4 Developer Preview 4 from the Mac Dev Center to continue building apps for Mountain Lion Developer Preview 3 Update. One change noted by 9to5Mac is the addition of a “Do Not Disturb” setting to Mountain Lion’s Notifications Center: Besides the Notification Center, Mountain Lion also borrows a number of other features from iOS, such as Reminders, Messages, and Game Center. Apple first previewed Mountain Lion back in February and promises deliver to customers in late summer 2012. Continue reading →

Former Apple TV Engineer Claims New Apple TV Interface Discarded 5 Years Ago
Macgasm notes an interesting tweet by former Apple TV engineer Michael Margolis who claims that the new Apple TV interface designs were “tossed out 5 years ago because [Steve Jobs] didn’t like them.” Alongside the 3rd Generation iPad, Apple also introduced a new version of the Apple TV that supports 1080P video. With it came an updated interface for the set-top box, (shown above) with icon-based category buttons and large billboard-style artwork for content. The interface was also rolled out to previous 2nd Generation Apple TV owners in a software update. Margolis goes on to say that “now there is nobody to say ‘no’ to bad design”, referring to Steve Jobs’ passing. Some MacRumors readers have complained about the new design, and others felt it was a paving the way for Apple TV apps in the future. Five years ago (2007), when the design was reportedly “tossed out”, Apple’s product landscape was quite different. Both the Apple TV and iPhone were first introduced in January of that year, and the App Store would not be launched for another year in mid-2008. Continue reading →

Apple Retail Stores Begin Prepping for iPad Launch as First Third-Party Retailers Open
With Apple’s official launch of the iPad in Australia, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong just hours away, it seems that some of the company’s retail stores are beginning their preparations. At Apple’s Fukuoka Tenjin store in Japan, which closed for the night a little over an hour ago, employees are currently hard at work removing iPad 2 units from display in order to replace them with demo models of the new iPad. Apple’s retail stores will be opening at 8:00 AM local time to begin selling the new iPad, but some third-party retail partners will be opening even earlier. In fact, our friends at iFixit have traveled to Australia in order to be among the first to obtain an iPad for teardown purposes and were first in line at a Telstra retail store in Melbourne that opened just a few minutes ago at midnight. The carrier is even celebrating the event with a meter square iPad cake . Update : iFixit now has its iPad in hand and will begin tearing it down shortly. Continue reading →

iPhone and iPod Engineering VP David Tupman Leaves Apple [iOS Blog]
Apple’s vice president for iPhone and iPod engineering David Tupman has left the company, according to 9to5Mac . While not a member of the senior executive team, Tupman spent a decade at Apple and has been considered to be one of the key iOS hardware executives reporting to senior vice president Bob Mansfield. Weeks before the introduction of the first iPod, Apple hired Tupman, and he soon became Apple’s vice president of iPod engineering. He had a big hand in the development and success of every iPod released to date, and when it was time to build the iPhone, Tupman joined the team behind that product, too. As Apple shifted its engineering resources to its mobile line of products, Tupman was named Vice President of iPod and iPhone Engineering— a major role at Apple. Besides playing a major part in growing Apple’s mobile device business into one of the most successful businesses ever, Tupman has his name on at around 70 Apple technology patents, such as power and battery life management, noise-canceling ear buds, Apple’s tiny iPhone power adapters, and mobile device interaction with accessories. Tupman’s future plans remain unknown, although we understand that he has been taking some personal time following his long term of service at Apple. Apple is said to be searching internally for Tupman’s replacement, but has apparently not yet named a successor. Continue reading →

‘Immense Pressure’ Leads to Cancellation of Steve Jobs Figurine
Earlier this month, we reported on Hong Kong company In Icons, which was attempting to release a realistic-looking Steve Jobs figurine. According to reports, Apple was at the time threatening legal action over the posable figurine, and PC World now notes that production on the figurine has been halted. In Icons has posted a statement on its website acknowledging that while it does not feel that it has violated any laws with the figurine but noting that it will cease production out of respect for Jobs and following “immense pressure” from lawyers representing Apple and Jobs’ family. I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that the original intention for creating the figurine was driven by a fan’s admiration of Steve. We respect copyright and trade mark rights and therefore indicated on our site that we were not providing any Mac, iPhone and iPad models with the figurine. Further, we haven’t used any Apple related brands. Unfortunately we have received immense pressure from the lawyers of Apple and Steve Jobs family. Regardless of the pressure, I am still Steve’s fan, I fully respect Steve, and his family, and it is definitely not my wish or intention that they be upset. Though we still believe that we have not overstepped any legal boundaries, we have decided to completely stop the offer, production and sale of the Steve Jobs figurine out of our heartfelt sensitivity to the feelings of the Jobs family. The 12-inch figurine had been set to sell for $99.99 plus shipping, and included a number of accessories to help users replicate any number of famous Jobs poses. Continue reading →

This is What a 7.85-Inch iPad Looks and Feels Like
There’s been increasing chatter in the rumor mill about the possibility of a smaller 7.85″ iPad that could be introduced sometime in 2012. 7.85″ iPad on left, 9.7″ (current) iPad on right The rationale behind the smaller form factor is for Apple to better compete against the new 7″ Kindle Fire tablet from Amazon. Amazon’s new Kindle line seems to be an early success with over 3 million sold over the first three weeks. Amazon doesn’t break down the numbers for individual models but calls out the Fire as “the most successful product we’ve ever launched”. Apple’s never been one to try to compete spec for spec against their competitors. The iPhone, for example, has kept the same basic form factor across 5 different generations, despite a proliferation of different sizes amongst its competitors. While we’re not sure what makes a smaller iPad different, we’ve heard it frequently enough that we believe Apple is in late prototyping phases for such a device. The supply chain has actually been very specific about the screen size of this rumored iPad. According to Chinese manufacturers, Apple is buying up 7.85″ screens for this upcoming mini iPad. So, we asked our friends at CiccareseDesign to put together these mockups of what a 7.85″ iPad would look like in comparison to the existing 9.7″ iPad. They also created this “actual size” PDF that can be printed out so you can play with one yourself in real life. Download Printable PDF : Home Screen (6MB) , Keyboard (18MB) View on an iPad : Actual Size Simply print the PDF at 100% size on your printer, and you too can see what a 7.85″ iPad feels like in hand. If you don’t have a printer handy, you can view it in actual size in an iPad web browser. If you save it as a web icon on your home screen, it will then launch without a menu bar so you can fully appreciate the size. The 7.85″ iPad actually feels a lot smaller than the existing iPad. The user interface elements, however, don’t feel that far out of place. Icons are smaller than the 9.7″ iPad, of course, but still bigger than the icons found on the iPhone. The on screen keyboard also seems quite usable at this size. Other elements, such as Safari’s location bar, do scale down but, again, are no smaller than what we’ve seen on the iPhone. We should point out that Steve Jobs had been adamant that a 10-inch screen is the minimum necessary for a tablet, and in a conference call said that he didn’t believe a 7-inch tablet was a good user experience: We’re not not making a 7-inch tablet because we don’t want to hit a lower price point. We just believe it’s too small to hit the user experience people want. When we make decisions, it’s not about cost, it’s about value when you factor in the software. We’re all about the best products at aggressive prices. So, based on that stance, it might seem unlikely that Apple would produce such a device, but they’ve been known to change their mind before.
