FTC Begins Sending COPPA Letters to App Developers Ahead of July Rule Change [iOS Blog]
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has begun sending educational letters to app developers to make them aware of upcoming changes to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) that was updated back in December . The two letters [ PDF , PDF ] inform developers that the restricted collection of personal information of kids 13-and-under has been expanded to include photographs and video and audio with a child’s image, among other things. Previously, only identifying information such as the child’s name, address, and telephone number was restricted. Please note that we have not yet evaluated your apps or your company’s practices to determine if they comply with COPPA as it is now – or as it will be starting July 1, 2013. We are sending you this letter to both alert you to the upcoming COPPA Rule changes and to encourage you to review your apps, your policies, and your procedures for compliance. The revised COPPA Rule requires all developers of apps that are directed to children under 13 – or that knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 – to post accurate privacy policies, provide notice, and obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting, using, or disclosing any “personal information” from children. App ‘platforms’ like Apple’s App Store and Google Play are explicitly exempted from the law and stores are not required to verify that apps are in compliance with the law; instead, it’s up to individual developers to verify compliance. Thanks Jules! Continue reading

Apple Photographer Details the Process of Capturing Product Photos
Apple is well known for the simple, no-frills product photos that highlight its lineup of mobile devices and as it turns out, a lot of work goes into capturing those images. The Verge interviewed Peter Belanger, a photographer who has worked with Apple for years, to shed some light on Apple’s creative process. In the interview, Belanger reveals that Apple exercises extreme attention to detail when it comes to product photos, providing him with both sketches and a comprehensive shot list. The team at Apple always has a really well developed shot list and sketches of what they need. I work with their talented art directors to translate those sketches into photos. We start by getting the position of the product and then move forward on lighting. Because Apple products have such carefully selected materials it is incredibly important to light the product in a way that will showcase the various materials accurately. As depicted in the photo below, Belanger uses an intricate setup of lights and equipment to accurately highlight the design of each item that he photographs. I pick an area to start with and think about how that material needs to be described. Once that section is done I move on to the next. This is how my sets get so complicated! I need to have control over each and every surface so when the client asks for a highlight to be elongated, I can do that. It’s similar to working on a file in Photoshop: you don’t do all your work on one layer. I think of my lights as layers that I can adjust individually to get the desired results. Belanger goes on to explain that most of his work is done in the camera, but that post production is used for the finishing touches. He captures the majority of his images with the Canon 5D Mark III , using a 24–70mm lens. Belanger’s full interview, which details more of his personal creative process and the tools that he uses, can be found at The Verge . Continue reading

Former Apple Retail Head Ron Johnson Fired as CEO of JC Penney

Penney CEO – source Johnson departed Apple in late 2011 and was replaced by John Browett , the CEO of British computing retailer Dixons. Browett’s tenure was a bumpy one and he was fired after less than a year on the job . Nearly six months after Browett left Apple, the position remains open, leading many to speculate that Johnson would be a natural fit to move back into the position he occupied for more than ten years. Zuckerberg: Android’s Openness Offers Opportunity for ‘Way Better’ Experience Than iPhone
Following today’s introduction of Facebook Home , a new people-focused integration layer for Android devices, Fortune has published an interview with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in which he discusses a number of topics including the rivalry between Apple and Google in the mobile market. In Zuckerberg’s view, the open nature of Google that has allowed Facebook to build Home offers a great opportunity for advances in the user experience that are considerably more difficult to achieve within iOS given Apple’s control over the platform. I think that Google has this opportunity in the next year or two to start doing the things that are way better than what can be done on iPhone through the openness of their platform. We’d love to offer this on iPhone and we just can’t today. And we will work with Apple to do the best experience that we can within what they want, but I think that a lot of people who really like Facebook–and just judging from the numbers, people are spending a fifth of their time in phones on Facebook, that’s a lot of people. This could really tip things in that direction. We’ll have to see how it plays out. Zuckerberg shared a similar sentiment with Wired , noting that the question of whether Facebook Home would be on iOS within two years was “above my pay grade”. Android is growing quickly, and we’re excited that the platform is open and that it allows us to build these great experiences. I think that this is really good for Google too. Something like this could encourage a lot of people to get Android phones, because I think people really care about Facebook. In a lot of ways, this is one of the best Facebook experiences that you can get. Of course, a lot of people also love iPhones—I love mine, and I would like to be able to deliver Facebook Home there as well. Apple and Facebook have at times had a strained relationship, as evidenced by difficulties related to Apple’s now-defunct Ping social networking feature in iTunes , although the two companies have recently been working more closely together with system-wide Facebook integration appearing in iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion. France Telecom: Time is right for a low-cost iPhone model
As part of an interview with Bloomberg, France Telecom CEO Stephane Richard says that sales of “premium” smartphones such as the iPhone and Galaxy S models may start to suffer as the economy of Europe continues to stagnate. The top smartphones bring with them high subsidies and up-front costs which are no longer fashionable, creating more demand for lower-priced models to accompany the cheaper plans that some European customers enjoy. Customers have become more frugal, says Richard…. Continue reading
