Hacked T-Mobile carrier file boosts iPhone 5 download speed

An altered carrier update that has been modified by two hackers successfully increases the bandwidth available for iPhone 5 units on T-Mobile’s US network, tests have found. The patch to the carrier update file, which was originally distributed to add LTE signal to the iPhone 5 using T-Mobile’s 1900MHz band, works on both unlocked AT&T units as well as “native” T-Mobile iPhone 5 devices without requiring a jailbreak, though instructions vary for customers using jailbroken iPhones….         Continue reading

Leaked part may show next-gen iPhone’s camera housing

A part discovered by French site Nowhereelse may be a section of a next-generation iPhone motherboard used to house the phone’s camera and flash. Significantly there are some architectural differences versus the iPhone 5, like the camera and flash being linked together on the same ribbon cable. The part is said to have been obtained by a Japanese vendor, Moumantai, which has also got its hands on other alleged next-gen iPhone components in the past, such as a Home button and a camera lens….         Continue reading

Pegatron’s Plans to Boost Workforce by 40% Fueling Lower-Cost iPhone Speculation

Just a day after reporting that its consumer electronics revenue would drop more than expected in the second quarter, perhaps due to weakening iPad mini demand, Apple manufacturing partner Pegatron has announced that it will boost its workforce by 40% in the second half of the year. The significant increase is fueling ongoing rumors of a lower-cost iPhone, as the firm has been reported to be handling production of the device. Pegatron’s Chief Financial Officer Charles Lin told Reuters on Thursday that 60 percent of the company’s 2013 revenue would come from the second half. He declined to comment whether the cheaper iPhone was among the new products to be made in the second half. Pegatron is a longtime manufacturing partner for Apple, currently handling the iPhone 4S and iPad mini, although the majority of Apple’s iOS device assembly is handled by the larger Foxconn. Pegatron currently employs 100,000 workers in its facilities, with yesterday’s report indicating that the iPhone 4S and iPad mini each account for more than half of Pegatron’s revenue for its communications and consumer electronics divisions respectively.         Continue reading

‘The Loop’ Launches New Magazine for iOS [iOS Blog]

Jim Dalrymple, the veteran Apple journalist behind The Loop , is launching a new magazine for iOS devices today. Rather than simply being an iOS version of the existing site, the magazine version of The Loop is a separate publication hosting longer form writing from a variety of contributors and perspectives. As Dalrymple notes in his welcome message: For many years people have been asking me why I didn’t release an app for the iPhone and iPad. The answer was simple: I couldn’t find anything that added value to what I did on The Loop. I wanted something more than a side-scrolling news app that basically imitated what I’d already linked to or written on the Web site. It wasn’t until I saw the format that Marco Arment used in The Magazine that I realized what I really wanted for The Loop — a design and reading experience that matched what I had on the Web site. An easy to read magazine that focused on original content, not on selling ads. The inaugural issue of The Loop magazine includes a half dozen articles: – A piece on enduring design from developer Matt Gemmell – An autobiographical piece from Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess talking about the impact of technology and how he has embraced it in his work – An essay on the impact of the smartphone revolution bringing computers into our pockets from Creative Strategies analyst and Time contributor Ben Bajarin – A look at the balkanization of the Mac gaming industry by The Loop co-founder and iMore senior editor Peter Cohen – A personal look at disruptive problem solving from Flexibits co-founder Michael Simmons – A brief introduction to wine for newbies from event planner Brenda Singer The Loop magazine is available through Apple’s Newsstand automatic subscription delivery service and published twice per month, with subscriptions priced at $1.99 per month. Apple Targets Android Source Code Search Documents in Suit Against Samsung [iOS Blog]

As the ongoing court battles between Apple and Samsung continue, Bloomberg reports that Apple has become more aggressive in pushing for Google to turn over Android-related documents that may be pertinent to the case. Apple argues that Google’s refusal to reveal the search terms it is using to find documents requested by Apple as part of the pretrial discovery phase of the latest lawsuit between Apple and Samsung suggests that Google may not be finding certain relevant documents. Apple, as part of its second patent-infringement lawsuit against Samsung in the same court, argues that Android is used in all of Samsung’s allegedly infringing products and “provides much of the accused functionality” in Apple’s claims, according to a court filing. “It’s a question of transparency,” Mark Lyon, a lawyer for Apple, told Grewal yesterday, referring to the documents. “We have concerns that they’re not doing a full search.” Google lawyer Matthew Warren has argued that Apple is seeking an unfair advantage, keeping Google out of the formal case in order to prevent reciprocal discovery efforts while still prying into Google’s internal documents through third-party discovery. According to Warren: Turning over the search terms Apple wants may lead to “future discovery that we don’t think they’re entitled to” and give Apple “ideas about how to proceed that they wouldn’t have had.” The case at hand relates to some of Apple’s and Samsung’s latest handsets, including the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S III. It is a followup to a previous case that saw a jury award Apple $1 billion , although the judge in the case has voided nearly half of that judgment due to jury errors and a new trial to determine corrected damages is set for November.         Continue reading

Sharp seeking $1 billion bailout loan for debt maturity payouts

A pair of Japanese banks are considering a 100 billion yen ($1 billion) bailout loan to Sharp, to help it meet an upcoming bond redemption. The electronics manufacturer has nearly $2 billion in convertible bonds, similar to Apple’s current offering, maturing in September. Lenders Mizuho Corporate Bank and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ are also giving Sharp an extension on 360 billion yen in lending that matures in June. The offerings by the banks puts Sharp in the red to the two banks to just over $8 billion….         Continue reading

Report: iPhone 5S preorders on June 20, shipping in July?

An allegedly authentic sales sheet from a Japanese telecom purports to confirm that Apple’s next iPhone will be called the 5S, and will begin preorders on June 20 with a formal launch sometime in July. The new phone is said from the document to also include iOS 7 and include a 13-megapixel rear camera. The timing appears to contradict statements by Apple CEO Tim Cook that new products would not be seen until at least the fall, but his carefully-chosen words leave room for some interpretation….         Continue reading
