Corning Announces ‘Lotus XT’ Substrate Glass for Brighter, Cheaper Mobile Displays
Corning yesterday announced ( via Engadget ) the launch of its latest glass substrate for LCD and OLED displays, Lotus XT Glass . While Corning is famous for its Gorilla Glass used by Apple and other device manufacturers to provide durable covers for their displays, substrate glass like Lotus Glass is used within the displays themselves to support the transistors and other components necessary for the displays to function. The Corning Lotus Glass platform enables organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays and liquid crystal displays (LCD) that use either low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) or oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) backplanes. The result is an energy-efficient, immersive display device that features high resolution, fast response times, and bright picture quality. Lotus XT Glass, an improved version of the original Lotus Glass announced in late 2011, offers improved thermal characteristics and stability to help increase efficiency and yield during display production. Lotus XT Glass is available in a variety of thicknesses ranging from 0.4 to 0.7 mm to support various applications. In an introductory video, Corning vice president John Bayne outlines how Lotus XT Glass will enable better displays with improved yields: Our customers, the panel makers, are basically making thin-film transistors and aligning those transistors with liquid crystal material and a color filter piece of glass. Everything has to line up just right to work. The distance features move during processing is called total pitch. And if you measure that from sheet to sheet, it’s called total pitch variation. If panel makers can minimize total pitch variation, they can realize higher manufacturing yields and lower costs. In addition, they can design devices that have higher aperture ratios which are brighter and use less power. It will still take some time for display manufacturers to adopt Lotus Glass XT for use in their processes and for those panels to make their way into finished products, but with Lotus Glass XT offering up to 75% better performance in total pitch variation than the original version, it seems likely that manufacturers will move quickly to adopt the product. ABC Begins Live Streaming Philly and NYC Stations via iOS App [iOS Blog]
American television network ABC has updated its iOS app with new live streaming television from local stations in Philadelphia and New York City. The change is an attempt to encourage viewers to keep their cable subscriptions as more and more users are ridding themselves of pay television and “cutting the cord”, reports The New York Times . Viewers will need to establish eligibility by verifying that they have an eligible pay-TV account with a local cable or satellite television company, and that they are within the local viewing area. ABC may be expanding viewership on its iOS app, but it will be stepping back the availability of its shows through Hulu and ABC.com, limiting access to paying cable and satellite subscribers. The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, says its live stream will be available in six cities where Disney owns the local affiliates later this summer, plus 13 more markets where Hearst Television owns the local stations including Boston and Pittsburgh. The company is negotiating with the conglomerates that own the more than 200 ABC affiliates to livestream those channels as well. The Watch ABC app is available free for iPhone and iPad on the App Store. [ Direct Link ] Continue reading

Paracable Offering Colorful Paracord-Wrapped Lightning-to-USB Cables [iOS Blog]
Paracable is a new company that is hand-wrapping Lightning-to-USB cables with paracord , a lightweight rope originally used in parachutes . The cables are not official ‘Made for i’ cables, but Paracable founder Travis Beck told MacRumors that they have sourced high-quality cables from China and have tested them thoroughly. The company buys cables without the USB-end attached in order to wrap the paracord, then attaching the end and using a hardening resin to ensure it is firmly attached. As Paracable explains , they were trying to create a cable that would not be destroyed by the founder’s cat Baxter quite as easily as Apple’s OEM Lightning cables. After much thought and prototyping, the first Paracable was born. As a byproduct of the Baxter-proof cable, we had also created a beautifully textured and colorful cable worthy of the iPhone’s gorgeous industrial design. “We can make these in all sorts of colors and patterns,” we thought. And so we did. Each cable is hand assembled and soldered one at a time using a unique process that ensures it’s longevity and durability. We spent many months perfecting the process in order to create the best cable possible. One that not only looks good, but will last. Paracables are available in more than 20 different colors for $27.95 each from the company’s website. Continue reading

Apple Maps for iOS Adds 3D Flyover Coverage in Paris [iOS Blog]
As noticed by iGeneration [ Google translation ], Apple has added new Flyover imagery and 3D buildings for Paris, France. The new imagery, which extends into the Paris suburbs, marks a significant enhancement for Apple’s 3D maps in France given that the only previous coverage in the country was for the city of Lyon. Apple maintains a list of cities for which it offers 3D building coverage, as well as other iOS 6 features, but it has yet to update the list with mention of Paris or any other potential recent additions. T-Mobile USA’s iPhone 5 Sales Hit 500,000 Units
As part of its first quarter earnings release today, T-Mobile USA revealed that its iPhone 5 sales stand at approximately 500,000 units less than a month after the device debuted on the carrier. The carrier also launched the iPhone 4 and 4S in limited markets where the devices are compatible with its networks, but T-Mobile did not specify how many units of those models it has sold. “Our first quarter operating metrics and financial results are showing positive impact from the changes we began making in the fourth quarter. Branded customer net additions turned positive for the first time since the first quarter of 2009 and our postpaid business has demonstrated significant improvement,” said John Legere, President & CEO of T-Mobile. “We ended the quarter with strong operational momentum, which is continuing into the second quarter, driven by the successful launch of our Un-carrier “Simple Choice” service plan and the introduction of the iPhone into our device line-up. Things only get more exciting from here, having brought T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS together to create the wireless industry’s value leader and premier challenger.” T-Mobile also announced that success with its Bring Your Own Device campaign continued during the first quarter, adding 100,000 iPhones per month from customers switching to the carrier even before it officially began offering the iPhone. T-Mobile – “Pipes” Comparing T-Mobile to other U.S. iPhone carrier launches, Sprint sold 1.8 million iPhones in its first quarter of availability in late 2011, although that debut took place within the context of the brand-new iPhone 4S launch. Earlier that year, Verizon activated 2.2 million iPhones in its first two months of availability. Continue reading
RunKeeper Updated With Pebble Smart Watch Support [iOS Blog]
Just over a year ago, popular workout tracking app RunKeeper announced that it was working on support for the Pebble smart watch, which ultimately broke a number of records in raising over $10 million on Kickstarter. With Pebbles having started shipping earlier this year, RunKeeper today announced the availability of updated versions of its iOS and Android apps to provide Pebble integration. Integration is relatively simple for the time being, with a paired Pebble automatically displaying elapsed time, distance, and pace when a RunKeeper activity is underway, although TechCrunch reports that the RunKeeper team is working on expanding functionality. This version of RunKeeper for Pebble is just a start, [RunKeeper CEO Jason] Jacobs says, noting that during the development process they realized they could add in much more, like setting pace on the smart watch, setting distance targets and more. RunKeeper also worked closely with Pebble to get this particular integration developed, and says we’ll see similar UI elements used as other fitness tracking apps come on board. Future work could go into helping RunKeeper differentiate its experience further as the development ecosystem for Pebble progresses. For those who did not order Pebble through Kickstarter, the smart watch is available for pre-order with delivery scheduled for summer. RunKeeper is a free download from the App Store. Google Glass Will Soon Add Text and Navigation Support for iPhone Users [iOS Blog]
Google Glass will soon gain stronger interoperability with iPhones, allowing iPhone-owning Glass wearers to access text messages and navigation on the device. Currently, only Android phone users can access navigation and texts on Glass via a special companion app. Google Glass pulls data from the iPhone’s cellular connection via Bluetooth tethering, but until now a number of Glass functions were limited. While Glass will happily work with any iPhone over Bluetooth or use any Wi-Fi connection to get online, iPhone users are currently unable to get turn-by-turn directions through Glass – one of its killer features. Those direction are pretty useful while you are navigating a new city and they do show off the power of location-based apps on Glass, but the software will currently balk if you ask it to give you directions while it’s connected to an iPhone. The $1,500 Google Glass is currently limited to a select few users but is expected to ship next year at a significantly reduced price. Continue reading

Adobe Shows Off Lightroom-Style Photo Editing for iPad
CNET reports on a sneak peek from Adobe product manager Tom Hogarty showing off the company’s concept for Lightroom-style photo editing on the iPad. The app would rely on cloud-based connections to serve as a companion app to the full Lightroom software, but offer a number of higher-end features for on-the-go photo editing. He wouldn’t promise when the app would ship or what exactly it would do, but he did demonstrate some features of the prototype software running on an iPad 2. He also offered several details about its features: – The ability to edit photos taken in raw photo formats, including Lightroom develop-module parameters like exposure, clarity, shadows, highlights, and white balance. – Cloud-synchronized editing so that changes made on a tablet arrive on the same photo on the PC. – The ability to zoom all the way to 100 percent for checking photo focus and details. Hogarty also noted that he would like to bring features such photo sorting and flagging to the app, although other features such as brushes for tweaking photos have not been included. The app is clearly a work in progress, with the feature set still yet to be finalized and performance issues remaining, but Adobe has made clear that it wants to make some of the same powerful photo editing tools from Lightroom available to photographers on the go. For photographers who travel and spend significant amounts of time in the field, an iPad capable of performing some Lightroom-style editing on raw images could significantly improve their efficiency and workflows. Apple Adds New 256 GB and 512 GB Flash Storage Options to iMac
Apple has added new storage options to its iMac lineup , allowing users to choose either a 256 GB or 512 GB flash storage drive as part of the order customization process. The new options are available as $300 and $600 surcharges respectively to replace the 1 TB traditional hard drive that is standard across all iMac models. Previously, the 21.5-inch iMac had not been available with dedicated flash storage options, only offering the standard 1 TB traditional hard drive and a $250 Fusion Drive option. Apple’s Fusion Drive marries a 128 GB flash drive with a 1 TB traditional hard drive to seamlessly provide fast access to most-used files while also offering relatively cheap mass storage for the remainder of the user’s storage needs. Those options remain available, but for those looking for an all-flash storage solution, Apple is now offering that in 256 and 512 GB capacities. For the 27-inch iMac, Apple did previously offer an all-flash storage solution, but only as a 768 GB drive carrying a $900 upgrade fee. The 27-inch iMac is also available with 1 TB and 3 TB traditional hard drive options, with each of those also available in a Fusion Drive configuration. But with the addition of 256 GB and 512 GB flash options, Apple is now offering users who do not need massive amounts of storage the ability to maximize speed on their machines. (Thanks, Steve!)
