Verizon Clarifies Discontinuation of Grandfathered Unlimited Data: Applies to New Subsidized Devices

Verizon yesterday made headlines for comments from Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo revealing that the carrier is planning to discontinue its grandfathered unlimited data plans when the carrier rolls out new shared data plans this summer. Verizon dropped those unlimited data plans within months of introducing the iPhone early last year, but customers who had previously been on the unlimited plans have been allowed to keep them, even through handset upgrades. Tim Cook and Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead introduce the Verizon iPhone in January 2011 Verizon issued a clarification to The New York Times today, noting that the loss of grandfathered unlimited plans will be limited to those customers purchasing new subsidized devices for use on the carrier. Users who do not upgrade their devices or who choose to upgrade at unsubsidized prices will be able to keep their unlimited data plans. Still, the change would appear to be set to affect the majority of Verizon’s current unlimited data customers, as most customers are interested in regular handset upgrades at subsidized prices. – Customers will not be automatically moved to new shared data plans. If a 3G or 4G smartphone customer is on an unlimited plan now and they do not want to change their plan, they will not have to do so. – When we introduce our new shared data plans, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to customers when purchasing handsets at discounted pricing. – Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan. – The same pricing and policies will be applied to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones. Sprint remains the only major U.S. carrier to offer unlimited data for iPhone users, and the carrier has indicated that it will continue to do so for the next-generation device, even if it supports 4G LTE networks that could lead to consumers using more data capacity. Reuters sources support claims of 4-inch iPhone displays

Sources for Reuters are supporting Wall Street Journal claims that Apple is using 4-inch displays for the next iPhone, and has already begun to place orders for the new parts. As with the earlier report, Reuters says that LG Display, Sharp, and Japan Display are handling production, which is allegedly in early stages; full production orders could begin in June. iPhone assembly could start as soon as August, if Apple follows normal patterns. One source comments that it’s still uncertain what share of display production each supplier will have…. Continue reading

China Mobile still in talks for iPhone, chairman says

China Mobile is in talks with Apple to offer the iPhone, confirms Mobile chairman Xi Guohua. The executive made the statement on Wednesday at a shareholder meeting in Hong Kong, his first since replacing Wang Jianzhou, who retired in March. Apple has refused to comment, and Xi didn’t elaborate much further at the meeting, saying he couldn’t predict if a deal would be reached this year. “China Mobile and Apple both have the will to strengthen cooperation,” he commented. “When there is more specific news, we will disclose it.”… Continue reading

China Mobile Again Confirms iPhone Talks with Apple [iOS Blog]

Reuters reports that China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua has once again publicly stated that the world’s largest mobile phone carrier is engaged in talks with Apple about offering the iPhone to its customers. “We’ve been actively talking to Apple on how we can cooperate,” China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua, who assumed the post in March, told a shareholders meeting. “I can’t give you too many details, but I’d like to repeat that both sides do hope to boost our cooperation,” Xi added after the meeting. China Unicom was Apple’s launch partner for the iPhone in China, and availability expanded to China Telecom earlier this year. Compatibility with China Mobile’s network has, however, been hampered by the carrier’s custom technology that would require specialized iPhone hardware to operate on the network. But with future wireless modem chips adding compatibility for China Mobile’s network, it is possible that the next-generation iPhone could be directly compatible with China Mobile’s network, eliminating the need for custom hardware to suit the carrier. China Mobile already has 15 million iPhone customers on its network, even though those customers are limited to the carrier’s 2G network due to the differences in standards for 3G networks. The carrier has even taken to officially supporting those customers with a SIM-cutting service and other resources. Xi’s predecessor, Wang Jianzhou, stated several times that China Mobile was in talks with Apple about the iPhone, so it is unclear whether Xi’s statements indicate that progress is being made or if there is simply an ongoing dialog between the two companies that has yet to lead to a firm relationship. Samsung and HTC stock nosedive, both thanks to Apple

Samsung and HTC stock have both taken a hit thanks to separate actions instigated by Apple. Samsungís stock saw $10 billion wiped off its value following a report by DigiTimes indicating that Apple had placed a large order for DRAM from its struggling Japanese competitor Elpida. Separately, HTCís shares also slumped by over 6 percent following an Apple initiated ITC injunction being enforced by US Customs, stopping the importation of its hotly anticipated One X and EVO 4G LTE handsets…. Time Warner Cable CEO Hasn’t Heard of Apple’s AirPlay [iOS Blog]

AirPlay is a technology that seamlessly moves audio and video from device to device in the Apple ecosystem. It’s built into the iPhone, iPad, and — most importantly — the Apple TV set-top box. Among other things, AirPlay can be used to send video from iPhone apps like YouTube, MLB.tv, or WatchESPN to the AppleTV. Apple hasn’t advertised AirPlay as strongly as some other features, like the iPhone 4S’s Siri, though it did run a television ad after the iPhone 4 was introduced in 2011. That said, it’s surprising that Glenn A. Britt, the chief executive of Time Warner Cable said he hadn’t heard of the service, according to the New York Times . “I’m not sure I know what AirPlay is,” he said, though he noted that he was an enthusiastic Apple customer. “Today we want to be on every screen. Today it’s a little bit clunky to get programming from the Internet onto the TV — not so hard to get it on your iPad. What’s hard is the plumbing, what wires do you connect, what device do you use. So the current Apple TV, the little thing, the hockey puck, really doesn’t do anything to help enable you to get Internet material on your TV.” Ironically, Apple has solved Britt’s problem — though he wasn’t aware of it — but the company is not pushing AirPlay too strongly upon its users, nor the media companies. The Apple TV natively supports only a handful of third party services like streaming MLB, NHL, and NBA games, as well as Netflix. However, AirPlay support has allowed many apps to send “programming from the Internet onto the TV”, just as Britt wants, and could foreshadow the market segment a rumored Apple television set would fill.
