Intuit Releases Quicken Essentials on Mac App Store [Mac Blog]

Intuit has begun offering its entry-level financial management software Quicken Essentials for Mac on the Mac App Store. This is the standard edition of Essentials that has been on sale for quite a while, not a new version — something Intuit is quick to point out in the description for the software. It’s merely a new distribution point. Quicken Essentials for Mac, a basic starter edition, helps you manage all of your personal finance in one place, so you can see where you’re spending and where you can save. Quicken automatically categorizes your financial transactions, stay on top of bills and helps you set goals so you can save more. **For Quicken Essentials for Mac users: Please note, this is not a new release of Quicken Essentials for Mac. ** Quicken Essentials does work under OS X Lion, but it is a far cry from Quicken for Mac 2007, which was the last fully-featured version of Quicken released for the Mac platform. Intuit promised last month that a Lion-compatible version of Quicken 2007 would be available for customers by “early spring.” Quicken Essentials for Mac is available for $49.99 on the Mac App Store. iPhone Drives AT&T’s Record-Smashing Quarter for Smartphone Sales with 7.6 Million Activations

AT&T today announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011, revealing that the carrier saw record-smashing sales of 9.4 million smartphones, nearly double the previous quarter’s sales and 50% higher than the company’s previous record. The iPhone was clearly the primary driver of smartphone sales for AT&T, as the carrier reported 7.6 million iPhone activations during that quarter, with the “majority” of those activations being iPhone 4S devices. In the fourth quarter, the company set a new record with 9.4 million smartphones sold, nearly double the number sold in the third quarter and 50 percent more than the previous quarterly record. Fourth-quarter smartphone sales represented more than 80 percent of postpaid device sales. Both iPhone and Android device sales set records. During the quarter, more than 7.6 million iPhones were activated, the majority of which were iPhone 4S, which went on sale Oct. 14, and more than twice as many Android smartphones were sold versus the fourth quarter a year ago. iPhone sales were helped by a superior customer experience, with AT&T delivering download speeds up to three-times faster than on other U.S. carriers’ networks. The iPhone and total smartphone numbers can not be directly compared, however, as the “activations” number AT&T reports for iPhones includes used devices activated on new contracts such as when a user’s old device is sold or given away upon upgrading. AT&T also touts its lead over Verizon in iPhone activations, noting that it has continued to easily outpace Verizon every quarter since AT&T lost exclusivity on the iPhone in early 2011. Finally, AT&T notes that it has continued to improve its voice and data network, with more than 80% of data traffic now coming over the carrier’s enhanced backhaul that allows for “4G” speeds on devices supporting at least HSPA+, such as the iPhone 4S. The carrier also reports that “call retainability”, an inverse measure of dropped call rates, has continued to increase and was over 99% throughout the quarter for 3G connections on a nationwide basis. Multi-Touch Page Flipping eBook Concept Shown on an iPad

The KAIST Institute of Information Technology Convergence has posted this video demonstrating their patented eBook interface prototype. The prototype is implemented on an Apple iPad but reportedly uses private Apple APIs, according to the video description. The use of private APIs would prevent the app from being approved for the App Store, but the video shows a number of novel ways to navigate eBooks besides the simple “page flip” motion found on Apple’s iBooks app. The new gestures shown include: – Page Flipping, by spreading pages and then flipping through – Page Flipping with finger bookmarking – Multiple page turning using multiple fingers – Faster swipes turning multiple page – Longer presses, then swiping can turn multiple pages – Writing the page number Interactive eBooks have been a big topic of discussion over this past week, since Apple’s launch of iBooks 2 with their new electronic textbooks. Apple Retail Stores Coming to India?

Indian business newspaper Mint reports ( via iPhone Hacks ) that Apple may be preparing to open retail stores in India, dramatically increasing the company’s presence in the country. Apple Inc. may open its own shops following the Indian government allowing full ownership of single-brand retail stores by foreign companies, according to a senior official of the department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP). The maker of the iPad and iPhone has been in discussion with the department for some time and is keen to re-enter Indian market after an earlier bid to do so in 2006, said the official on condition of anonymity. According to the report, Apple’s interest comes as Indian regulators have eliminated ownership requirements that had previously required single-brand retail outlets such as Apple Stores to have at least 49% domestic investment. One potential hurdle does remain, as ventures with high levels of foreign investment such as what Apple would offer will be required to source 30% of their product value from small businesses in India. But regulators appear willing to address that requirement as well depending on Apple’s official analysis of the viability of a retail effort in India. When asked whether the 30% local sourcing clause will be a hindrance, the DIPP official said, “Let Apple finalize its business plan and the investment it wants to make. If they tell us that the 30% sourcing is a problem, at that stage we will look into it,” he said. The report notes that Apple attempted to create an Indian presence back in 2006 with a tech support center , but the company quickly abandoned those plans . Continue reading

Apple Releases 2012 Proxy Statement to Investors

Apple has posted its 2012 Proxy Statement ( PDF ) on its investor relations page . The proxy statement is released ahead of the annual stockholders meeting, and details voting procedures, background and compensation information on the company’s directors, and information about executive perks and compensation, amongst other items. This year’s shareholders meeting will take place on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific, in Building 4 of Apple’s Infinite Loop headquarters. Shareholders will vote on a number of different items: – To elect the Company’s Board of Directors (the “ Board ”). The Board intends to present for election the following eight nominees: William V. Campbell, Timothy D. Cook, Millard S. Drexler, Al Gore, Robert A. Iger, Andrea Jung, Arthur D. Levinson, and Ronald D. Sugar – To ratify the appointment of Ernst & Young LLP as the Company’s independent registered public accounting firm for 2012 – To hold an advisory vote on executive compensation – To consider four shareholder proposals titled “Conflict of Interest Report”, “Shareholder Say on Director Pay”, “Report on Political Contributions and Expenditures”, and “Adopt a Majority Voting Standard for Director Elections” – To transact such other business as may properly come before the Annual Meeting and any postponement(s) or adjournment(s) thereof. Some interesting notes in the statement include the fact that CEO Tim Cook owns a total of 13,754 shares of Apple plus 1,362,500 RSU’s which will vest into shares if Tim Cook stays with the company for the foreseeable future, worth $580.5 million at current prices. Other executive officers hold hundreds of thousands of RSU’s which should keep them with the company for years to come. In the statement, Apple explained the board’s philosophy behind the large RSU grants: The compensation for the other named executive officers consists of three elements—long-term equity awards in the form of RSU awards, annual performance-based cash bonuses, and base salaries—that are designed to reward performance in a simple and straightforward manner. The compensation program is weighted toward long-term equity awards rather than cash compensation in order to maximize retention and ensure that a significant portion of the named executive officers’ compensation is tied to the Company’s long-term stock price performance. The named executive officers’ 2011 cash compensation levels were substantially below the levels generally provided by peer companies, despite the Company’s strong financial performance. In addition, the Company has no long-term cash compensation program, nor does it have a pension plan. The Company’s executive compensation program is intended to promote and retain stability within the executive team. Each named executive officer has been an employee of the Company for at least 10 years. The Company expects each of its executive officers to contribute to the Company’s overall success as a member of the executive team rather than focus solely on specific objectives within the officers’ area of responsibility. Because the Company’s executive officers operate as a team, the Compensation Committee’s decisions on executive compensation in 2011 were largely driven by considerations of internal pay equity as to the named executive officers, other than Mr. Jobs and Mr. Cook. As a result, the compensation awarded to Messrs. Oppenheimer, Forstall and Johnson in 2011 was largely the same. Mr. Cook’s compensation is set at a higher level than the compensation for the other members of the executive team to reflect his responsibilities for the overall leadership of the Company. In addition, the statement notes that “there was no formula or peer group “benchmark” used in determining the award amount. Rather, the award was the product of the Board’s business judgment, which was informed by the experience of the Board members, the input received from Mr. Jobs, and the Board’s assessment of Mr. Cook’s performance in assuming responsibility for the Company’s day-to-day operations during Mr. Jobs’s prior leaves of absence.” The statement discusses executive compensation for several more pages, including the cash bonus payout structure and other arrangements. Nuance Bringing Voice Recognition to Televisions and Intel Ultrabooks

With the popularity of Siri on the iPhone 4S and rumors of a voice-controlled Apple television set, voice recognition and control have leapt to the forefront of the technology industry as companies seek to revolutionize the way users interact with their devices. Nuance Communications has long been a leader in the the field of voice recognition, and quietly provides that back-end functionality for Siri and other Apple products. Rumors of an Apple television set have centered around Siri voice control , fueled in no small part by Steve Jobs’ comments to biographer Walter Isaacson regarding his idea for a television set interface being “the simplest user interface you could imagine”. In seeking to open up some of that vision to a broad array of television manufacturers, Nuance today announced the launch of Dragon TV, a natural language recognition platform specifically tailored for the television experience. Leveraging Nuance’s voice and natural language understanding capabilities, Dragon TV creates the “lean-back experience” consumers demand, with the ability to easily find content by speaking channel numbers, station names, show and movie names. People can even search for content by actor and genre, and stay connected via Twitter, Facebook and Skype. Nuance’s list of commands understood by the platform also include requests for guide/schedule information and DVR playback control. In addition to Nuance’s push into television, the company today also announced the launch of a partnership with Intel to bring voice recognition technologies to the chipmaker’s new “Ultrabook” platform for ultra-light notebook computers. While Nuance already offers a number of voice-related applications for PCs, the new partnership will reportedly deliver greater integration of the functionality for core system features. Nuance’s Dragon voice recognition technology, which is at the core of the renowned Dragon NaturallySpeaking software used by millions, will be deeply integrated into the new Intel application. Using this new capability, consumers will be able to control their Ultrabook just by using their voice. Consumers will be able to quickly and easily launch applications, play media, interact with social media sites and control their email and calendars with natural voice commands. Additional details on the Ultrabook integration will be available later this year. Continue reading

Police Arrest 141 New York City Merchants in Stolen iPhone Sting

The New York Post reports that a sting conducted by the New York Police Department last week targeting vendors suspected of selling stolen iPhones resulted in 141 arrests as the city works to cut down the market feeding on such thefts. According to the report, undercover officers approached workers at over 600 locations suspected of participating in sales of stolen iPhones and offered the devices to workers at low prices while stating that they had been stolen from their owners. Undercover NYPD officers sold the electronics to merchants at more than 600 stores around the five boroughs this week — asking from $50 to $200 for iPhone 4s and iPad 2s — after clearly stating the popular gadgets were stolen, said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne. The sting — which nabbed clerks and workers at businesses such as supermarkets, barbershops, pawnshops and bodegas — began Tuesday and continued through yesterday. “That’s our intention, to reduce the places where people who steal these things can go and sell them,” said NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. “If someone is offering you an iPad for way below market value, you have to realize that it’s most likely stolen.” iPhones are popular targets for thieves in New York and elsewhere, with an officer in one New York precinct reporting that in some months more than half of the reported robberies involve an iPhone. The popularity of Apple’s devices has not only driven an active market in thefts and resales of the stolen property, but also in counterfeiting. Apple has been targeting vendors selling counterfeit Apple products in New York City and elsewhere, seeking to shut down those companies making unauthorized profits on Apple’s name with knockoff products. TV Industry Preparing for Voice Recognition Interfaces in 2012

Apple iScreen concept by Ciccarese Design Businessweek reports on the movement towards voice-activated TV remotes in the coming year. The move seems triggered by Apple’s plans to enter the TV market in the near future. Steve Jobs said that he had finally “cracked it” , referring to the TV user interface. Most believe that this revelation relates to Apple’s Siri voice recognition system, and the industry is on the move: Whether the rumors are true that Apple is planning to release a TV set by 2013, Siri-like voice recognition is headed for the living room. Microsoft (MSFT) is already there, via its Xbox 360 game console, and Comcast (CMCSA), Samsung Electronics (SHCAY), LG, and Sharp are working on voice-enabled features for TV sets, set-top boxes, and related products. Businessweek suggests an voice command as simple as “Record the next episode of Modern Family ” as a much needed improvement over the current solution. Jakob Nielsen of Nielsen Norman Group goes on to say “Anything would be better than what we have now.” Upcoming remote devices are said to look more like iPhones than traditional remotes, with possibly a single physical button to activate the microphone. Others are working to simply embed microphones around the living room and eliminating a physical remote altogether. Nuance suggests that 5% of TVs could be voice controlled by Christmas 2012. We’ve previously reported about competitors “scrambling” to identify what an Apple television set might look like. The lead up is reminiscent to the large number of tablet plans from competitors in the months leading up to the original iPad launch. Continue reading

Apple Admits to Court that Samsung Will Draw More Customers from Android than iOS

Earlier today, we noted that a U.S. judge late last week declined to issue a preliminary injunction barring Samsung from selling several of its Galaxy smartphone and tablet devices in the United States while Apple’s case alleging patent and design infringement moved through the courts. From the decision released by Judge Lucy Koh, The Verge noted that it had seen portions of the court order that had been redacted and which revealed that Apple had licensed one specific iOS interface patent to both Nokia and IBM. Samsung had, however, declined to license the invention when offered the option by Apple as part of settlement talks in late 2010. Reuters now reveals how that redacted portion of the court order came to light, as the initially-posted court order had mistakenly allowed the redacted text to be visible upon copying and pasting. In her 65-page ruling denying Apple’s request for a preliminary injunction against Samsung, Koh attempted to redact nearly two dozen sentences or short fragments. But because of a formatting characteristic in the prior electronic version, the redacted material can be viewed by copying text from the PDF and pasting it into another document. The publicly-available version of the court order has been corrected and the redacted portions are no longer visible, but Reuters shares a few tidbits of information revealed in the redacted portions. Perhaps most significantly, Koh cites as part of her rationale Apple’s admission that Samsung is more likely to take market share from other Android manufacturers than it is from Apple. According to the redacted portions, Apple’s own studies show that existing customers are unlikely to switch from iPhones to Samsung devices. Instead, the evidence suggests an increase in sales of Samsung smartphones is likely to come at the expense of other smartphones with Android operating systems, Koh wrote. The admission is not a tremendous surprise given the barriers to switching app ecosystems and surveys of iOS device owners reporting significant loyalty to the platform, but it is interesting to see Apple’s formal admission of the relatively low risks Samsung poses to Apple’s current user base. Apple would of course argue that Samsung’s alleged infringement would prove to be a bigger threat regarding users who are just moving to a smartphone for the first time. Another interesting revelation from the court order is Samsung’s argument that Apple shouldn’t be awarded an injunction in part due to the sheer impossibility of Apple being able to keep up with demand for smartphone devices by itself. But Koh acknowledged that such an argument was “dubious” in the face of testimony and evidence presented by Apple claiming that it is indeed capable of meeting demand. The dispute between Apple and Samsung has been receiving the most attention in the media given the number of cases going on around the world and the numerous day-to-day developments. But the first major decision in the United States may actually come when the International Trade Commission decides whether to rule in favor of Apple’s request for a ban on the import of HTC smartphones over patent infringement. A final ruling on that request had been scheduled for tomorrow, but has been delayed until December 14th. Continue reading
