Another 1984-era Apple sales video spoof emerges
Less than a week after a previously-unreleased Apple sales force parody video surfaced on various sites (and finally on YouTube), a similar sales video from the era has also appeared on the video site. The previous film, “1944,” based its satire on the company’s “1984″ commercial and portrayed Apple as engaged in a war with its main competitor at the time, IBM. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs appeared as President Roosevelt…. Continue reading
Verizon firing up text and video 911 services in 2013
Verizonand Maryland-based TeleCommunication Systems are banding together to launch the United States’ first text messaging to the 911 emergency service system. It’s hoped that the system will enable handicapped users — or people who are unable to speak over the phone for fear of further risk to themselves — to more effectively communicate with first responders…. Judge penalizes Samsung for withholding code in Apple case
The ongoing Apple vs. Samsung case being tried in the United States took an unusual turn yesterday as Judge Paul S. Grewal granted an unusual “preclusive sanctions” order against Samsung for failing to produce source code for Apple in a timely fashion. The judge had already found Samsung in violation of the order two weeks earlier, and found that the company was guilty of blatantly stalling the case…. Continue reading

Walmart iPhone price cuts not universal, checks show [u]
(Updated with Walmart statement) The reported Walmart discounts on iPhones aren’t in effect across the entire Walmart chain, reports observe. The Verge notes that it managed to find a Walmart in Austin with the same bargain, but four other US outlets had regular prices. 9to5Mac says it called 17 Walmarts around the US, none of which were offering discounts. Separate of these, though, one out of two Austin Walmarts was offering the deal, as well as one out of two stores in Edmond, though the Frontage Road location said the iPhone 4S was “$114 this morning, for a little while.”… Continue reading

Scott Forstall and Mickey Drexler Net Millions in Apple Stock Sales [Mac Blog]
A pair of filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reveal that Apple executive Scott Fortsall and board member Mickey Drexler each sold off tens of thousands of shares of Apple stock on Friday, netting millions of dollars each. Forstall, who serves as senior vice president of iOS Software and has been a fixture in Apple’s keynote presentations and media events, sold off 64,151 shares of Apple stock on Friday, netting roughly $38.7 million. Forstall gained 120,000 shares of Apple stock last month as a 2008 retention bonus of restricted stock units converted to actual stock. 55,849 shares were immediately sold off at that time to account for the taxes due on the conversion, and Forstall held on to the remaining shares until last Friday. Following Friday’s transaction, Forstall holds 2,988 shares of Apple stock, worth roughly $1.75 million at today’s share price and the same number of shares he held prior to last month’s vesting of his 2008 retention bonus. Forstall is also in line to receive a number of other stock grants should he remain with the company over the next several years, including a 150,000-unit grant that will vest in equal portions next year and in 2016. A separate grant of 100,000 units will vest in 2014. Meanwhile, longtime Apple board member Mickey Drexler, who serves as Chairman and CEO of J. Crew and was previously President and CEO of The Gap, has cashed in on stock options dating back nearly a decade in order to reap a substantial windfall. Drexler exercised a set of 20,000 options from 2003 priced at $9.16 each and a second set of 20,000 options from 2004 priced at $14.205 each, selling off all 40,000 shares on Friday for $24.1 million. After accounting for the exercise prices on the options, Drexler netted close to $23.7 million. Drexler continues to hold 584 shares of Apple stock worth roughly $384,000 at today’s share price. Sprint Sells 1.5 Million iPhones in 1Q 2012 [iOS Blog]
Sprint today was the last of the three major iPhone carriers in the United States to release earnings for the first calendar quarter of 2012, announcing that it sold 1.5 million iPhones during the quarter. The number is down slightly from the 1.8 million units sold in the previous quarter, the debut quarter for the iPhone on Sprint. Sprint remains the smallest of the three major U.S. iPhone carriers in terms of units sold, as Verizon activated 3.2 million iPhones during the quarter while AT&T continued to lead the pack with 4.3 million units . Sprint did, however, experience the smallest percentage decline from the previous quarter among the three carriers. The carrier also noted that 44% of its quarterly iPhone sales went to customers new to Sprint, up from 40% in the previous quarter. Continue reading

Valve Co-Founder Says Tim Cook Didn’t Visit Valve HQ
Apple CEO Tim Cook didn’t visit Valve headquarters according to company co-founder Gabe Newell. The rumor , originally reported by AppleInsider , was squashed by Newell in a podcast interview. Video game website Kotaku had a preview of the podcast from Seven Day Cooldown that included this quote: We actually, we all sent mail to each other, going, “Who’s Tim Cook meeting with? Is he meeting with you? I’m not meeting with Tim Cook.” So we’re… it’s one of those rumors that was stated so factually that we were actually confused. No one here was meeting with Tim Cook or with anybody at Apple that day. I wish we were! We have a long list of things we’d love to see Apple do to support games and gaming better. But no, we didn’t meet with Tim Cook. He seems like a smart guy, but I’ve never actually met him. The report of the meeting between Cook and Valve executives set off a torrent of speculation about partnerships between the companies, including rumors of Valve’s Steam service integrating with the App Store or an Apple television. iPhone Again Represents Over Half of Verizon’s Smartphone Sales in 1Q 2012
Marking the first significant piece of data to help build a picture of Apple’s quarterly iPhone sales numbers ahead of next week’s earnings release, Verizon today announced its own earnings results for the first quarter of 2012, revealing during the associated conference call that it activated 3.2 million iPhones during the quarter. The number is down from 4.3 million iPhones in the previous quarter, which was part of Apple’s record-setting launch quarter for the iPhone 4S that saw the company sell 37 million iPhones worldwide. Analysts are generally expecting Apple’s iPhone sales for the first calendar quarter of 2012 to be down slightly from that 37 million number, and Verizon’s results certainly support that belief, at least in the United States. But increased international availability of the iPhone 4S during the first quarter, most notably a launch in China in mid-January and an expansion to China Telecom in early March, should help Apple maintain strong iPhone momentum. Overall, Verizon reported sales of 6.3 million smartphones during the first quarter, meaning that the iPhone continues to represent just over half of the carrier’s smartphone business. But Verizon is continuing to shift the focus of its data highlights toward its 4G LTE network, with the carrier noting that it sold 2.9 million LTE devices during the quarter. 4G LTE users now make up 9.1% of Verizon’s wireless user base. Lost Interviews Offer a Unique View of Steve Jobs
After Steve Jobs’ passing last year, a number of so-called ” lost interviews ” with the iconic businessman were released, but Fast Company claims it has ” a treasure trove of unearthed interviews , conducted by the writer who knew [Jobs] best.” Since 1985, reporter Brent Schlender had covered Steve Jobs for Fortune and the Wall Street Journal and discovered three dozen tapes with recordings of interviews Schlender had conducted with Jobs over 25 years: Rummaging through the storage shed, I discovered some three dozen tapes holding recordings of extended interviews–some lasting as long as three hours–that I’d conducted with him periodically over the past 25 years. Many I had never replayed–a couple hadn’t even been transcribed before now. Some were interrupted by his kids bolting into the kitchen as we talked. During others, he would hit the pause button himself before saying something he feared might come back to bite him. Listening to them again with the benefit of hindsight, the ones that took place during that interregnum jump out as especially enlightening. The interviews cover much of the time that Jobs spent at Pixar, which often gets forgotten because of what he did putting Apple on top of the corporate world. But, of all that Schlender shares of Steve Jobs is the change in Jobs after he marries Laurene Powell-Jobs and starts a family. Even after he went back to Apple, there was nothing Jobs liked more than spending time at home. Not that he wasn’t a workaholic. We were iChat buddies for several years, so his name would pop up whenever he was working at his computer at home. Almost invariably, he was in front of his Mac until after midnight. We’d occasionally have a video chat, and if it took place early in the evening, I’d often see one of his children in the background looking on. The full article, ” The Lost Steve Jobs Tapes ” — as well as the selected highlights from the interviews themselves — are worth a read and show some of the personal and professional growth that Jobs experienced during his years at NeXT and Pixar. Flashback Malware Still Affecting over 100,000 Macs
While Apple has pushed out several software updates to detect the Flashback malware and remove it from infected systems, Symantec noted late yesterday that over 100,000 machines remain afflicted by the issue as detected by their sinkhole operation to redirect server traffic. Symantec pegged the number at approximately 142,000 as of Monday, listing a rough estimate of “over 99,000″ as yesterday’s data was still coming in. Those numbers are down from a peak of over 600,000 machines two weeks ago, but a substantial number of machines are still infected by the malware. The statistics from our sinkhole are showing declining numbers on a daily basis. However, we had originally believed that we would have seen a greater decline in infections at this point in time, but this has proven not to be the case. Currently, it appears that the number of infected computers has tapered off, but remains around the 140,000 mark. As there have been tools released by Symantec and other vendors in the past few days concerning this threat, the infection numbers should have seen a dramatic decrease by now. Symantec also takes a look at the domain name generator that allows infected machines to connect to their command-and-control servers to receive instructions. The generator uses a list of 14-character strings rotated each day, coupling each string with one of five top-level domains (.com, .net, .info, .in, or .kz) to find its instructions. The report also claims that Flashback-infected systems can receive updated command-and-control server locations through Twitter, although no details on that process are provided. A similar claim was made for earlier versions of Flashback, although there has apparently been no demonstration of the Twitter delivery method actually being used. Continue reading
