iPad being slowed by display supply, better labor standards

Any problems with iPad shipments at the moment are more attributable to restrictions on display supply, and Apple suppliers conforming to “more sound” labor standards, says Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. “Recently, we have gotten questions from investors whether speculation of iPad production cuts carry any merit. From our supply chain checks, we believe concerns have good intentions but misplaced as it appears that production is limited more by supply of new HD retina displays and conforming to more sound labor practices vs. slowing demand,” he writes in a new memo…. Verizon to ‘compete’ with AT&T by adding $30 upgrade fee

Verizon underscored competitive problems in the US cellular marketplace on Wednesday by instituting a $30 device upgrade fee. Starting April 22, customers will have to pay the premium as existing subscribers if they want to get a device subsidized on a two-year plan. Amazon Appstore echoes Apple, Google with in-app purchases

Amazon gave Appstore developers an important catch-up on Tuesday through support for in-app purchases. Its custom Android store now uses the same 1-Click engine to handle buying content as for the apps themselves. The switch preserves the typical 70 percent royalty paid to developers and only restricts things such as solely extra-app purchases, illegal or “offensive” material, and virtual currencies that could be exchanged between users…. Path updates self-titled app, now hashing user data

Once the center of a firestorm of scandal regarding its collection of users’ address book data without explicit permission, social networking app Path has announced that in order to further safeguard security, it will hash user contact data so that it is anonymized, according to a new blog post from the company. US Congress asks 33 iOS developers to talk app privacy

The US Congress’ House Energy & Commerce Committee chairman Henry Waxman and chairman Fred Upton have issued a letter to 33 iOS developers, asking them about privacy policies when it comes to apps, reports say. A number of prominent developers are included in the list, such as Twitter, Facebook, SoundCloud, Turntable.fm, Path, and Tweetbot creator Tapbots.
