Dexim Visible Green iPhone Cable Makes Charging More Visible [iOS Blog]
While most USB-charged Apple products like the iPhone and iPad come with a USB charging cable in the box, there is a thriving third-party market for these easily lost accessories. Dexim’s $20 Visible Green USB-Dock Connector cables have a distinctive twist: they use electroluminescence to “visibly show the electrical current flowing through the cable”. Completing the illusion is the fact that there are multiple speeds that the current can “flow”, adjusting with the battery life of the device it’s charging. While perhaps not the most practical iPhone charger, particularly for bedside nighttime charging, the Visible Green cable is certainly the coolest. Dexim’s Visible Green cables are available via a number of retailers , including Amazon and others . Continue reading

Steam Companion iPhone App Now Available to All Users [iOS Blog]
Launched in beta last week , Valve has opened up its Steam iPhone companion app to all users . The app allows Steam users to view their Steam friends list, see what games their friends are playing, and chat with players in-game. Gamers can also browse and purchase from the Steam library of titles from the iPhone, to play later on a PC or Mac. However, there is no purchasing of iOS games through the app, something that, aside from the fact that Steam doesn’t support any iOS games, Apple would surely frown upon. Steam Mobile for iPhone is available free on the App Store. [ Direct Link ] Continue reading

Valve Releases Steam Companion App for iPhone [iOS Blog]
Valve, the company behind the popular gaming platform Steam, has released a new companion app for iPhone called Steam Mobile as a closed beta. The app allows Steam users to view their Steam friends list, see what games their friends are playing, and chat with players in-game. Gamers can also browse — and apparently purchase, though the app descriptions are a little fuzzy on that point — the Steam library of titles from the iPhone. However, there is no purchasing of iOS games through the app, something that, aside from the fact that Steam doesn’t support any iOS games, Apple would surely frown upon. “The Steam app comes from many direct requests from our customers,” said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. “Seeing which of your friends are online and playing a game, sending quick messages, looking at screenshots for an upcoming game, or catching a sale – these are all features customers have requested. Mobile is changing way people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone.” While it has been released as a “closed beta”, users sign up to be included via the app itself. Steam Mobile for iPhone is available free on the App Store. [ Direct Link ] Continue reading
Apple Sneaks by Android in Fourth Quarter U.S. Smartphone Sales
Reuters reports on new data from research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech showing that Apple slipped past Android by the narrowest of margins in fourth quarter U.S. smartphone sales, with Apple’s iPhone taking 44.9% of the market and Android taking 44.8%. “Apple has continued its strong sales run in the U.S., UK and Australia over the Christmas period,” Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at the research firm said. “Overall, Apple sales are now growing at a faster rate than Android across the nine countries we cover,” Sunnebo added. The results, driven by Apple’s blockbuster quarter in the wake of the iPhone 4S launch, saw Apple double its U.S. sales share year-over-year while Android slipped from its 50% share a year ago. Apple yesterday reported sales of 37 million iPhones during the quarter, far exceeding expectations. Kantar’s report also focuses on Windows Phone, which continues to struggle despite the high-profile launch of Nokia’s Lumia smartphones . Windows Phone’s market share remains at less than 2% in all nine markets followed by Kantar. Continue reading

Apple Seeds OS X 10.7.3 Build 11D50 to Developers [Mac Blog]
Apple has pushed out Build 11D50 of OS X 10.7.3 to registered developers. Apple continues to report no known issues in the seed notes, and asks developers to focus their testing on Address Book, iCal, Mail, Spotlight and Safari. The previous builds had appeared to be close to a final release, but Apple is clearly still making some final tweaks to the update. The release description has indicated that the main improvements in OS X 10.7.3 will be support for several new languages and fixes for issues related to smart cards, directory services authentication, and Windows file sharing. EFI Firmware Update Brings Lion Internet Recovery to Mid-2010 13-Inch MacBook Pro [Updated] [Mac Blog]
As noted in our forums , Apple today pushed out a new firmware update specifically targeting users of the company’s Mid-2010 13-inch MacBook Pro model. The new MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.5 brings compatibility with Lion Internet Recovery, allowing users of OS X Lion to reinstall the operating system from scratch on a brand-new hard drive without the need for physical recovery media. About MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.5 This update enables Lion Recovery from an Internet connection on MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) models. For more information about Lion Recovery, please visit this website: http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/ . The update has not yet appeared on Apple’s support downloads site, but weighs in at a small 2.9 MB for the user who posted the Software Update screenshot. Lion Internet Recovery debuted alongside OS X Lion on new MacBook Air and Mac mini models introduced last July. The feature adds a minimal bootable install onto a machine’s firmware to allow it to connect the Internet and download the full Lion operating system for installation. OS X Lion by default installs a recovery partition on the machine’s hard drive for this purpose, but for users who are installing a blank hard drive or whose recovery partition becomes inaccessible, Internet Recovery provides yet another fallback option for Lion installation. Following the July introduction of Internet Recovery on the current MacBook Air and Mac mini models, Apple extended the feature in mid-September to the then-current Early 2011 MacBook Pro models that had been released in February 2011. One month later Apple brought the feature to Apple’s current-generation iMac line , leaving only the aging Mac Pro without support for Internet Recovery. With today’s firmware update, Apple has for the first time reached back to a previous-generation model to bring Lion Internet Recovery to the 13-inch MacBook Pro that was offered from April 2010 through February 2011. Update : Users are also reporting that similar EFI firmware updates are available for the Mid-2010 white MacBook and the Mid-2010 Mac mini. Continue reading
