YouTube creators prep Zeen for finding, making magazines
YouTube’s main founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen have been developing a service that could both create and help read “beautiful magazines.” Zeen currently has very few details, but its name is a play on the concept of a personal “zine” and suggests a way of aggregating news and other articles that can be shared with others. Social sharing will be a key ingredient, as both the privacy policy and offers to link accounts on Facebook or Twitter make it clear that this will be a regular feature…. Continue reading

Google video sales ‘miniscule,’ media strategy conflicted
Google’s difficulty competing with Apple in media may be a virtue of problems with its own internal culture based on investigations brought to light on Tuesday. CNET understood that executives behind Google’s VP of global content, Robert Kyncl, complained that the content strategy was “fragmented” and working in separate directions. Content partners have complained both that Google’s actual content lagged Apple’s and that the Android and YouTube teams didn’t appear to be coordinating with each other…. Continue reading

Apple Hires UI Designer Who Helped Mock Up Leaked Siri Design
University of Georgia student and user interface concept designer Jan-Michael Cart has officially announced on his new blog that he is headed to Cupertino to take a seven-month internship with Apple. Cart has gained some fame in the Apple rumor community for his ideas and concept mockups for potential iOS and Lion feature additions and enhancements. And like that, my time has come — I am now a member of the Apple community. I will still update my website with random small portfolio additions. I will also open up the blog portion of my website to document my day-to-day happenings in Cupertino. Stay tuned! Notably, MacRumors and Cart worked together earlier this year to create a video mockup of the “Assistant” feature for iOS that appeared a week later in the iPhone 4S as Siri. Working from our information received from a source with direct knowledge of Siri, Cart created a remarkably accurate depiction of how Siri would function. While Cart’s hiring by Apple may be a surprise to some given his role in leaking the design of Siri ahead of its public revelation, this is not the first time that Apple has drawn from what might be considered the fringes of the iOS community from Apple’s point-of-view. Notably, Apple previously offered internships to Peter Hajas , developer of the jailbreak tool MobileNotifier, and Nicholas Allegra , better known as jailbreak expert Comex. Other examples of Cart’s user interface design concepts and work can be seen on his YouTube account . Continue reading

‘Flight Control’ for iPhone and iPad is Now Free for One Day [iOS Blog]
Firemint has dropped the price of their critically acclaimed Flight Control game to Free for the first time ever. The game is part of a daily promo from EA, and will only be free for one day. Flight Control was one of the first “classic” iPhone games that first pioneered the line-drawing game mechanic. The early Flight Control game video shows how its played: Firemint followed up with an iPad version called Flight Control HD and just recently released an update to the game that added new levels and a ‘rewind’ feature that can be purchased in-app. The game is a must have for anyone with an iOS device, and it’s a great time to get it while it’s free. App Store Links: Flight Control , Flight Control HD (for iPad) Continue reading

Apple Posts a Beatles iTunes TV Ad: Covers
Apple has posted a new TV ad on their YouTube page promoting The Beatles on iTunes. The ad is called “Covers” and shows off many of different album covers from The Beatles in an animated fashion. The ad ends with “The Beatles on iTunes”. The Beatles first appeared on the iTunes store back in November 2010. The new TV ad seems part of another promotion announced earlier today of a free animated version of the band’s Yellow Submarine book as an exclusive on Apple’s iBookstore. Continue reading

Intel Working on Standardized Thunderbolt Docking System for PCs
VR-Zone reports that Intel is quietly working on developing a standard docking format for their upcoming Ultrabook platform. The new docking system would incorporate a Thunderbolt connector as well as what appears to be a proprietary connector as well. The non-Thunderbolt port would reportedly be used for power as well as direct access for the Ethernet controller which is required to support technologies such as Intel vPro and Microsoft’s Connected Standby . Apple’s own solution has been much simpler. Their Thunderbolt Cinema Display offers a single cable which splits into a Thunderbolt cable and a Magsafe power cable. The Thunderbolt cable carries USB 2.0, FireWire 800, Ethernet, and Video from your laptop to the monitor. Unfortunately, that separate non-Thunderbolt docking connector in Intel’s proposal would likely prevent it from being directly supported on the Mac. Still, any major adoption of Thunderbolt technology can only help industry acceptance and the proliferation of more accessories. Belkin has already announced their own Thunderbolt docking solution which works much like Apple’s display. Intel is aggressively pushing forward the concept of the Ultrabook which bears a close resemblance to Apple’s MacBook Air. Ultrabooks are expected to be the hot product at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012 which takes place in January. Continue reading

Thinner iPad 3 Coming with Low-Power Retina Display?
Rumors of a high-resolution 2048×1536 display for the iPad 3 have been circulating for some time now, but the new display’s effect on the device’s form factor is still up for some debate. A claim from earlier this month regarding Apple requiring two light bars in order to manage the much higher resolution of the iPad 3 was followed just last week with a report that the device will be 0.7 mm thicker than the iPad 2 in order to accommodate that dual light bar design. More claims of a 2048×1536 display for the iPad surfaced earlier this week, with that analyst’s source indicating that Apple will continue to use in-plane switching (IPS) technology for the new display. But a new report from Jeffries analyst Peter Misek and shared by Forbes claims that Apple will not be using IPS on the iPad 3, and has in fact invested $500 million to $1 billion in new equipment to allow Sharp to produce the required displays using technology permitting a thinner and lower-power design. Also, we believe that Apple and Sharp together have a modified IGZO (indium, gallium, zinc) technology to achieve 330 dpi, which is sufficient for an HD display while not using IPS nor having to include dual-bar LED backlighting. In our view, this should lead to several design advantages, namely the device can be thinner, battery life should be longer, and the overall experience for users should be meaningfully improved. Misek noted in a separate report issued earlier today that Apple and Sharp are also working together on displays for an Apple television set, with a retooled Sharp manufacturing line preparing to begin mass production of those obviously much larger displays in February. Steve Jobs Exhibit on Display at U.S. Patent Office Museum
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last week opened a new exhibit honoring Steve Jobs at its museum in Alexandria, Virginia. Located in the atrium of the office’s Madison Building headquarters, the free museum offers interactive exhibits, a portrait gallery and a theater. The Steve Jobs exhibit consists of 30 giant iPhone-like display panels, most of which display the front pages from over 300 patent and trademark filings that bear Jobs’ name as inventor or co-inventor. The remaining panels offer a brief description of the exhibit and photos of Jobs. “This exhibit commemorates the far-reaching impact of Steve Jobs’ entrepreneurship and innovation on our daily lives,” said Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO David Kappos. “His patents and trademarks provide a striking example of the importance intellectual property plays in the global marketplace.” Located in the atrium of the Madison Building, the exhibit features more than 300 of the patents that bear the name of the iconic innovator along with many of the trademarks that have given Apple its instantly recognizable identity around the world. The display gives insight into the visionary commitment Jobs gave to each of the products and designs he influenced during his time with Apple, the company he co-founded at the age of 21 with his friend and fellow computer enthusiast Steve Wozniak. The Steve Jobs exhibit at the USPTO Museum runs through January 15, 2012. Continue reading
